Dear Student,
Please be aware that regarding content, practice and overall improvement in your English, there is no difference in the quality of online lessons compared with classroom lessons. In fact, if you read the advantages and disadvantages of having online lessons below, there are actually far more positives. If you are unsure, I am happy to provide a free 45 minute, no obligation, trial lesson for you to experience yourself.
Advantages of online lessons
• We can video lessons (with Zoom for example) and share them with you so it is easy for you to review everything at any time.
• The teacher can share their screen with you so everything is clear and easy to understand. This makes giving instructions easier.
• It is easy to take photos of your screen / take screen shots.
• It is easy to share documents and is more environmentally friendly.
• You don’t have to travel or worry about parking and you can have your lessons anywhere in the world that has a good internet connection.
• You should feel more comfortable having lessons in your own home.
• Small classes online (one to one, two to one, three to one, four to one) make absolutely no difference in terms of lesson quality and amount of English practice and correction compared with a normal classroom lesson.
• The student can share their screen with their teacher. This is useful as the teacher can see what you write for example and easily make corrections / give advice at the same time as you write.
• It is easier and better for the teacher to share his / her screen when correcting students’ writing. The teacher can just highlight the mistakes without actually writing all over your piece of paper.
• Communication over the internet is becoming much more popular. Online lessons provide a perfect opportunity to gain experience of communicating using this form of communication.
• We don’t have to worry about Covid!
Disadvantages
• Some students may not have a good internet connection. I use a wire to connect my laptop directly into the internet router.
• Some students are not very good at using technology. This is why Anna, the online lesson assistant, can provide help and guidance to help the students become familiar with online lessons and the application we use.
• For some people, it may be easier to have lessons at a school. If students have children for example, they might disturb you during your lesson, someone might knock on your door and you might need to answer it.
• With bigger groups, it can be difficult to practise speaking. That is why we have no more than 4 students for online General English classes.
• Some students don’t have printers. If the teacher sends you a worksheet to do for homework, you can still write the answers in your notebook.
