📚✨ A special visitor and a lovely storytime!

We welcomed a librarian to nursery to share stories with the children. It was a wonderful opportunity to enjoy books together, listen, ask questions and let our imaginations grow! 💛

Sharing stories helps children develop their vocabulary, listening and attention skills, while encouraging curiosity and a love of reading.

Meeting a librarian also helps build connections with our local community and introduces children to the wonderful world of libraries. 📖

🚽 LET’S TALK POTTY TRAINING🚽

Potty training is an important part of a child’s development, helping them build independence, confidence and the self-care skills they will need as they grow.

The key is starting at the right time for your child – looking for signs of readiness and giving them plenty of encouragement, consistency and opportunities to practise.

Starting the process well before your child reaches school age gives them time to learn these skills gradually, without unnecessary pressure as starting school approaches.

At Pepper Royd Day Nursery, we support all of our families through the potty-training journey.

We work alongside parents to provide consistency between home and nursery and help children develop these important skills at a pace that is appropriate for them.

🔢 Counting, matching and learning through play! 🟡

Our children have been exploring numbers by matching balls to the correct numeral and counting how many they need. A simple, hands-on activity with lots of opportunities for learning! 💛

This supports:

🔢 Early maths – recognising numerals and connecting them with quantities.

🟡 Counting skills – counting each ball once and discovering that the last number tells us how many there are altogether.

🤲 Physical development – practising hand–eye coordination and fine motor skills as they pick up and place the balls.

🧠 Thinking skills – concentrating, checking their choices and solving problems.

💬 Communication – using words such as “more”, “fewer” and “the same” as they compare groups.

Through playful exploration, children build confidence and lay the foundations for future mathematical learning. 🌟

🍂 Little autumn treasures, big learning opportunities! 🍂

An autumn walk offers so much for children to discover. Collecting colourful leaves, interesting twigs and shiny conkers encourages curiosity and gives us wonderful opportunities to talk, explore and learn together. 🌳

These simple experiences support children’s learning and development in lots of ways:

🍁 Communication and language – describing colours, shapes and textures introduces words such as “crunchy”, “smooth” and “pointy”.

🌰 Early maths – counting treasures, sorting leaves by colour and comparing the lengths of twigs helps children explore numbers, size and patterns.

🤲 Physical development – bending, reaching and carefully picking up leaves and twigs develops coordination and control.

🔍 Understanding the world – noticing falling leaves and changes in the weather helps children discover the seasons and connect with nature.

🎨 Creativity and imagination – collected treasures can become autumn pictures, patterns or ingredients in pretend woodland cooking!
Walking together also creates time to chat, share discoveries and enjoy being outdoors. 💛

On your next family walk, take a little collection bag and let your child lead the discoveries—with adult supervision when collecting small items such as conkers.

📱🌿 Little moments away from screens can become big opportunities for learning.

At Pepper Royd Day Nursery, we value time spent chatting, sharing stories, exploring outdoors and learning through play. 💚

Screens are part of everyday life, and this isn’t about making parents feel guilty. It’s about making space for the hands-on experiences children enjoy—building towers, splashing in puddles, making marks and using their imagination.

A few simple ways to create screen-free moments at home:
📚 Share a favourite book.
🧱 Build something together.
🍂 Head outside for a little adventure.
🎨 Get creative with drawing or playdough.
💬 Put devices aside and enjoy a conversation.

When children do use screens, sharing the experience gives you an opportunity to talk about what they’re watching and connect it to everyday life.

🔥🍛 A little outdoor cooking at Pepper Royd Day Nursery & Forest School!

We made curry for lunch over the fire—bringing together fresh air, warming food and plenty of opportunities to learn. 🌿

Cooking outdoors helps children explore smells, textures and flavours, discover how heat changes food, and understand where their meals come from. It also creates opportunities for conversation, cooperation and learning about fire safety with close adult supervision.

Sharing a meal outdoors is a lovely way to build a sense of community. There’s something special about enjoying lunch together around the fire! 💚

📚🌳 From The Gruffalo story to Gruffalo crumble!

After reading The Gruffalo, the children brought the story to life by making their own pretend Gruffalo crumble in the tuff tray! 🥄🐾

This playful activity supported so many areas of development:

🗣️ Language and communication – talking about the characters, exploring new words and retelling favourite parts of the story.

👐 Fine motor skills – scooping, pouring, stirring and mixing helped strengthen the small muscles in their hands.

🧠 Thinking and problem-solving – choosing ingredients and exploring how to combine them encouraged children to make decisions and try out ideas.

🔢 Early maths – comparing quantities and using words such as “more”, “less”, “full” and “empty” made maths part of the play.

🤝 Social skills and imagination – sharing tools, taking turns and creating together gave children opportunities to develop their own ideas.

Connecting a much-loved book with hands-on play helps children explore the story more deeply and builds enjoyment of books and reading. 💚

A game of noughts and crosses, Forest School style! 🍂

Our children collected conkers and twigs to make their own game outdoors. As they took turns placing their conkers, they practised counting, spotting patterns and thinking about where their next move might go.

The best part? They made the game themselves using what they found around them. 🌿

Honestly, we think this might be the most accurate nursery review ever. 😂🍞

At Pepper Royd Day Nursery snack time is about more than filling little tummies. It’s a chance for children to make choices, practise asking for what they need, build independence and enjoy time together around the table.

And sometimes, excellent customer service really is as simple as more toast. 💛
