Three holiday sessions completed today! 🙌

One online student currently in Central America 🌎 and two face-to-face sessions delivered in the village! 🏠

From online EYFS phonics and maths support, to making Year 4 division fun! Yes, honestly! 😅

I have absolutely loved seeing some familiar faces this afternoon and look forward to welcoming some new students that are joining me this summer over the next few weeks!

Sometimes the biggest breakthroughs in maths come from revisiting those smallest building blocks first.💡

☀️ As I get ready for my summer boost sessions, I'm choosing some of my favourite maths activities that I find super useful for helping me understand students' thinking.

🧠 A few short activities can reveal so much about a child's confidence with maths and also where I can best support them.

Two of the key building blocks that I tend to find need most attention and support are 'subitising' and 'part-whole understanding'.

🔢 Subitising (recognising how many there are without counting)

🔢 Part-whole understanding (seeing how numbers can be split up and then put back together again)

Developing these skills helps children to:

🧮 Develop a stronger number sense

➕ Understand the relationship between addition and subtraction more deeply

🧠 Spot patterns with numbers and make connections

💡 Build confidence

It's amazing how revisiting these foundations can can help maths start to make sense and sometimes I find they help to unlock barriers.

🎶 These superstars have just had their final ukulele session before the summer break. 🎶

Here's a screenshot of us celebrating a whole year of learning together! It's flown by!!

They really do work so hard every week, and along with their ukuleles, they always bring the biggest smiles with them. 🥰

It's hard to put into words, but there is much more than just musical progress being made each week.

Aside from strumming patterns and chord shapes, I have loved watching confidence blossom, new friendships form, and just a real sense of achievement at the end of each lesson. 💜

I can't wait to see what September holds for this awesome little group! 🙌

Is everyone feeling warm enough?! 🫠

🌎 A super busy start to the week over here with online sessions reaching all over the country - and further afield too!

I've just realised that the majority of my sessions on Mondays and Tuesdays are all online, including:

💫 Maths, English, science with a Year 8 student

🌎 Early years maths and phonics with a world-schooling student

💫 Maths and English with a Year 3 student

💻 Computing with a Year 6 student

🎶 Ukulele group session

💫 Maths, English and science with a Year 7 student

I never thought I'd teach as many online sessions as I do, especially after lockdown tested my technology skills to the limit. I admit I was quite apprehensive at first but I really love online learning now 🙌

Today I've been SO glad that the majority of sessions were online, mostly so I could avoid travelling around in this heat! 😅

After-school students had lots of fans and cold drinks on offer to help cool us down 💦

In fact, fans and cold drinks will feature highly in the rest of this week's sessions!

This week, a lovely rose in my garden unexpectedly found its way into one of my 1:1 lessons! 🌹

A student was carrying a big worry from school, so we stepped away from our maths work for a few minutes and spent some time talking in the garden about what they could try when things felt a little overwhelming.

It was just a few short moments, but a good reminder that learning isn't always about pushing on with the next maths question. Knowing when to pause and finding ways to feel grounded can be just as important.

The maths was still there when we came back to it, and we were both in a much better place to tackle it and the student felt much calmer.

I received a message from the parent later saying she was grateful that I value wellbeing in my sessions 💜

This rose was actually gifted to me by my lovely colleagues when I left the classroom to begin tutoring 🥰 Every year it reminds me how much life has changed!!

These days though, weekends generally feel a little calmer than when I was in the classroom, with more time to enjoy moments in the garden like this one.

Whatever you're doing this weekend, I hope you manage to find a moment of calm 😌🧘‍♀️

A special throwback to last June 🌻

Sharing this lovely repotting activity feels quite apt because often the best growth happens when children are simply given the right space, support and conditions to flourish.

This awesome student did just that.

He has since moved on to a new school and is thriving. A school councillor no less! 🙌

I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of their journey. And every time a new family chooses to work with me, I'm genuinely grateful for the trust they then place in me. 💜

I'm lucky to work with lots of families, both during the day and after school, all with very different goals for their children.

🌱 For some, building self-confidence is key.

🌱 For others, it's finding ways to overcome barriers to learning such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.

🌱 And for some families, it's about finding the best approach to learning that suits their child's needs and interests.

Supporting children as they grow in confidence, develop new skills and discover what works for them is something I never take for granted.

🤔 Does your child sometimes muddle 13 with 30, 14 with 40, 15 with 50... and so on?

This was supposed to be a quick warm-up... but it turned into so much more. The student made fantastic progress in just one lesson, developing their understanding of number and place value. 🎉

One of the things I love about tutoring is having the time to really delve into children's understanding and thinking without feeling rushed to move on.

This fab resource is from Maths Corner - it was exactly what I was after. Highly recommend checking out the great resources over there! ⭐

A busy but wonderful day! 🥰

Thank you so much to all of my lovely parents for being flexible this morning so I could watch my little one's sports day. 🥎☀️

My afternoon lessons were as normal and I'm so grateful for this lovely feedback - after their first session! I really love my job and the impact it has on my students and their families. 💜

Bit different to a PMU post . But My Alexia who is 12 is currently being home schooled due to various reasons . and we have decided to have private home tuition in some core subjects (in combination with other learning)

And I just want to give a shout out to Noteworthy Tuition

Nicola, the owner and tutor has been a good friend of mine since our kids were babies. And is not only a lovely person but an amazing and highly experienced teacher so it was a no brainer to choose her

Alexia has come out of her first lesson happy and smiling. With lots to tell me about what’s she’s learned which is literally a first since she was in year 6. Seems she has already made good progress

So if anyone is considering a private tutor we - and most importantly - alexia - cannot recommend Nicola enough
