Last Tuesday, our Buds and Buds Holiday Club children visited Dereham Cancer Care to help paint some more colourful pebbles for the fantastic caterpillar they are creating in The Queen Mother’s Garden.

The children had a brilliant time getting creative and loved being part of this wonderful community project.

A big thank you to everyone at Dereham Cancer Care for making us feel so welcome. We’re already looking forward to visiting our new friends again very soon!

Today, we visited York House Care Home - Dereham, Black Swan and had the pleasure of meeting all the lovely residents. We began by warmly welcoming them with high fives and fist bumps. Next, we tried on some amusing party glasses with the residents and took photos. After that, we showcased our dancing skills and sang a few songs. We also took a stroll around the care home, met some new residents, and showered them with cuddles and high fives.

For August our book of the month in Shoots is Dear Zoo, we started off our activities by making some cheese snakes! With our grown ups help we weighed out the ingredients before mixing them all together! Once combined we each got to make our own cheesey snake by rolling out the dough and adding some raisins for eyes, we then got yo take these home to enjoy!

Last week in Seeds, we celebrated Elephant Day by creating our own elephant pictures using glue, tissue paper, and colouring pens. All the children had the opportunity to colour their elephants in any colours they chose. They then used glue to spread around their pictures, enhancing their fine motor skills in the process. Finally, the children added white tissue paper to complete their artwork.

Last week in our Seedlings room, we've been having plenty of discussions about holidays, especially as many of our friends have been away. Our book of the month is "Peppa Goes on Holiday," which has inspired us to start a passport craft project. We've been exploring various holiday destinations, reading our chosen book, and enjoying taking photos in front of a beach backdrop.

In the Caterpillar room, we have been making the most of the warmer weather by introducing our new herb garden and water play area.
The children have really enjoyed getting hands on with nature by planting, watering and taking care of our herbs. They have been exploring with their senses whilst developing an understanding of how plants grown and what they need to survive.
Our water play has also provided lots of opportunities for exploration and discovery. The children have been pouring, scooping, filling and emptying different containers experimenting with capacity and noticing what happens when water moves between different objects.
These experiences support many areas of the EYFS which include understanding the world through exploring plants, nature and the world around them; PSED to develop confidence, responsibility and teamwork as children care for the garden and share resources; Expressive Arts and Design, encouraging children to explore natural materials, textures and water through creative and imaginative play!

World Lion Day is an annual event that takes place on August 10th.
It was founded in 2013 by Derek and Beverly Joubert with the intention of raising awareness about the challenges lions face in the wild.
Prior to this, the Joubert's also partnered with National Geographic to create the Big Cat Initiative. Again, this initiative focused on trying to stop the rapid decline in lion populations.
Lions are facing huge threats
The number of lions in the wild has dropped dramatically, and this trend is continuing. The population of African lions, for example, has dropped by 43% since 2001. Without our help, lion populations may never recover.
As part of our activities in Shoots we made our own lion pizzas by spreading pizza sauce on our pitta breads and then adding a cheese mane before adding some raisins for eyes and a nose!
We also coloured in some lion pictures too- it's been a roarsome day talking about lions and doing some lion themed activities! 🦁

This month in Caterpillars, we are diving into our delightful book of the month, "Will You Be My Friend?" We've kicked off some exciting activities inspired by this lovely story! One of the highlights has been our baking session, where the children eagerly joined in to create scrumptious shortbread. They shaped the dough into fun people shapes, allowing their creativity to shine as they decorated them in vibrant colours of their choice.

Throughout this process, we have been focusing on important skills like turn-taking and communication. It’s been heartwarming to see everyone share their ideas and patiently wait for their turn, working together beautifully. As we decorated our tasty creations, we engaged in meaningful conversations about our friends and the joy they bring to our lives. The laughter and smiles were infectious, and it was truly a wonderful experience for us all! 😊

Butterflies at Mattishall are absolutely loving our new giant Connect 4 set! There is so much joy in hearing the rings clink into place and watching the excitement build with every single turn. While the children are busy having a blast and cheering each other on, they are also developing some incredible life and cognitive skills:✨ Problem Solving & Strategy: Figuring out where to drop the next ring to make a row or block a friend.✨ Fine Motor Skills: Picking up, holding, and carefully slotting the large rings into the stand.✨ Social-Emotional Growth: Practicing patience, taking turns, sharing, and experiencing the friendly competition of game play.✨ Visual-Spatial Awareness: Recognizing patterns, rows, and empty spaces on the grid. It is amazing to see how a simple game can bring so much laughter and rich learning to our outdoor play!

We’re thrilled to update you on the progress of our new garden! After two weeks of dedicated work, it’s really starting to come together. There’s still a bit more to finish, such as the arrival of new toys in the next few days. We're excited about the new boat that will be made and the signs we’ll be putting up in different areas, as well as a new canopy in the reading area. Some of the highlights include a new fence, an improved climbing frame and sandpit, a fresh rubber floor, a construction area, and a revamped muddy kitchen. We can’t wait to share all these fantastic changes with you!
