Dr Teresa Forde is the Chair of The University of Derby's Gender Equality network and is leading the events for IWD and women' s history month. When asked what she for she had this to say:

“I choose to challenge barriers to change and address inequality. The photo is taken at a Star Trek convention where I am contemplating 'to boldly go'! I believe that we can challenge ourselves and others to work both individually and collectively to address these issues, so I choose to challenge and use my voice where I am able to do so.”

Su Taylor, Project Manager and LGBT+ role model discusses the importance of an inclusive environment:

“LGBT+ History month is a time to look back at our progress, to celebrate our steps forward, and to remember those who fought for equality. We have seen some progress in legislation, but it’s people who create and embed the change that we want to see. We’re lucky to have the support from all levels of staff at the University of Derby for LGBTQ+ matters, with a top-down approach from our Vice Chancellor. This is shown through our active staff and student networks, and through our Roles Models and Allies programme which highlights the importance of having visible and vocal support to be your whole self at the University.”

Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Education and Special Education Needs & Disability, Andy Bloor describes what LGBT+ History month means to him:

“A few years ago, I was marching in London Pride. It was a big carnival like celebration, and then suddenly I noticed a small group of elderly people with a small banner on the side of the crowd: “Pride 1973”. That was the year I was born and here were the people who made this style of Pride possible. The people who weathered a small park in south London and hostility beyond what we would now recognise in the UK today.

The recent mini-series from Russell T Davies (“It’s a Sin”) reminded me that life as a gay man was pretty grim until very recently and we all stand on the shoulders of those who fought for their rights before us; those that lived, those that died and those that simply survived. These rights were hard fought for and can so easily be lost. THAT’S why LGBTQ+ History Month is so important: simply because we must never forget. Ever.”

Caroline Ball, one of our university’s LGBT+ role models, explains the importance of celebrating LGBT+ History Month:

"It is so important for us to celebrate LGBT+ History Month, to celebrate the wonderful diversity of our staff and student population, and to have and to highlight our University Role Models, so staff and students can see that there are people just like them, everywhere they look, though they may not always know it; and that who you are is always something to be celebrated.”
