JKD or Jeet Kune Do
JKD, or Jeet Kune Do, is the result of the mind of Bruce Lee. The concept itself is not entirely original in terms of its ideology, but it is unique in the philosophy it represents.
In simple terms, the premise is to do what is necessary at that particular moment in time. If you can react accordingly, then you have responded effectively. This concept is alive in all aspects of life—at home, at work, in relationships, and, in this case, in confrontation.
Unlike many Western martial arts systems, which have developed into what is commonly understood as a syllabus, JKD approaches self-expression as an individual pursuit rather than as a method designed for a broad audience. This contrasts with more linear arts, such as Karate, where structure and form often take precedence.
I use the terms “it” and “will” because they encompass what lies at JKD’s core: you. A sentient being with your own cognitive, reactive, and, when necessary, explosive signature. JKD seeks to explore and develop these personal characteristics. Therefore, it cannot be confined or marginalised by a fixed form or rigid structure.
The way we address this—and, more importantly, teach JKD—is through core principles. I appreciate that this has been, and continues to be, a source of confusion. Following Bruce Lee’s death, many practitioners with backgrounds in Judo or Karate taught JKD through a more literal and direct technical structure.
However, JKD is not technique; it is the reaction of the reactor. In essence, it is cause and effect.
For example, a thrust delivered with a straight cross differs from a thrust delivered with a knife. Although both actions may be executed in a similar manner, each requires a different response. Apply the principle of the butterfly effect, and you are well on your way to understanding the raw essence of JKD.

World Heavyweight Champion. A remarkable achievement.
Why is the MIT holder clamped to the spot?
The appearance of accuracy or speed is only applicable when the focused target is moving: this adding to the complexity and intelligence of the technique. Stood still and “Zero” response is dated & ignorant.
