Last week, Year 9 had a fantastic three days at Whitemoor Lakes, taking part in a range of activities including paddleboarding, canoeing, raft building, archery, challenge courses and abseiling.

Throughout the trip, students showed bravery, perseverance, teamwork and kindness, encouraging each other and stepping outside their comfort zones. Staff got involved too, with plenty of teachers joining the activities and even a few unexpected dips in the lake!

A brilliant residential filled with fun, challenges and plenty of fantastic memories.

On Wednesday, musicians from Years 11 to Year 13 performed at Derby Cathedral as part of its lunchtime concert series.

The programme showcased the breadth of our students’ musical talents, ranging from operatic arias and Classical and Romantic sonatas and concertos to jazz-infused piano and guitar pieces and rock music.

Congratulations to all of our musicians on their outstanding performances.

Thank you to the team at Derby Cathedral for welcoming us, to our peripatetic music staff for their coaching and accompaniment, and to the family and friends who came along to support our musicians.

Year 7 had a fantastic day at Rosliston Forestry Centre this week!

From outdoor laser tag and team-building challenges to an exciting Birds of Prey workshop, students enjoyed a day of fun, friendship and new experiences.

It was wonderful to see them developing their teamwork, communication and confidence while spending time with their form tutors.

Year 2 enjoyed a fantastic Significant People Day on Monday, dressing up as a person of their choice and exploring what makes someone significant. From history and sport to entertainment and different professions, the pupils shared why their chosen person has made an impact.

Following on from this, the children were introduced to Florence Nightingale, as a significant person from the past, and they will now follow a key history enquiry question linked to this famous individual.

It was wonderful to see the range of people they chose and hear why each one was significant to them. Well done, Year 2!

Last Friday marked the beginning of our exciting annual House competition, with House Netball the first event in this year’s calendar. Years 7–9 took to the court last week, followed by Years 10–13 today, with the Houses battling it out to see which will be crowned this year’s House Netball champions.

House events are an important part of school life at Derby High School, helping students build friendships, develop teamwork and foster a strong sense of belonging. They encourage healthy competition and collaboration between year groups, while giving students opportunities to develop confidence, leadership skills and resilience.

Most importantly, House events bring the school community together and create a strong sense of school spirit and pride.

Primary Open Week 5th - 9th October 2026

The best way to learn about our vibrant Primary school is to come for a tour. We would be delighted to show you around.

During our Primary Open week, you will meet our Head, Mrs. Amy Chapman, and Head of Primary, Mr. Jeremy Harper. Mr. Harper will give you a guided tour of our Infant and Junior classrooms, along with the onsite sport facilities, the Refectory and outdoor space. This provides a fantastic opportunity for families to see the school during a normal day and meet teaching staff and pupils.

We are excited to welcome back DCCT to Derby High School during the October half term break.

Their multi sports holiday coaching is for Year 1 to Year 6 children. Sports activities include Dodgeball, Cricket/Rounders, Tennis, Badminton, Tri Golf, Football, Bocca, Athletics and Target Throwing.
