The Old Forge Day Nursery, Findern, Derby We have a team of hugely enthusiastic, highly trained, and experienced Nursery Practitioners who ensure all children receive the best care and attention.

The Old Forge Day Nursery is a homely, friendly nursery set inside an attractive nineteenth century half-timbered building which has been specially modernised to provide a safe and secure environment for children between the ages of 3 months to 4 years old. Set in beautiful grounds and surrounded by trees with an impressive on-site Forest School, it provides a truly idyllic setting for your child to thrive. We have a specialised Baby Bear room with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere where babies have the opportunity to play and have fun with our large selection of baby toys and sensory equipment and a separate quiet room where they can sleep in peace. Our baby room supervisors will be happy to discuss your baby's routine before they start nursery. From Baby Bears, we cater for every specific age group leading next to Bear Cubs (1-2 years), Little Bears (2-3 years) and Big Bears (3 years) who each have their own age related activities. This leads right up to Pre-School Bears for children heading to Primary School in the next academic years which offers an excellent education in all areas to prepare your child ready for the transition to infant or primary school. We will continually keep in close contact with your child's specific school to ensure they are given the very best start. We have funded places available (please call for details). Our nursery cook provides healthy nutritious home-cooked meals daily which are planned carefully to specifically meet your child's dietary needs.

Celebrating something rather grand! 💚

Whether they're sharing stories, cheering from the sidelines, baking together or simply offering an extra cuddle when it's needed, grandparents hold a special place in many childhoods.

This Grandparents Day, we'd like to give a special mention to all the Grandmas, Grandpas, Nannas, Grandads, Nans and Pops in our nursery community.

🍂 Harvest donations in hand and artwork carefully carried, it was time for a walk to Findern Church. 🍂

Some of our children from across the nursery enjoyed delivering our Harvest Festival donations last week.

Along with the donations, we took some artwork the children had created to help decorate the church for the celebrations.

Once inside, we all sat together and listened as Rachel shared a story from the Bible and talked to the children about Harvest time and what it means.

A special morning spent connecting with our local community and taking part in a tradition that marks the changing season. 💚

🦔Sticky fingers, crunchy bark and a pot full of leaf soup 🍂
Our Big Bears have been making the most of the changing season this week...

Using bark collected outdoors, the children created their own hedgehogs, carefully gluing the pieces in place to make the spikes. Along the way, there were lots of opportunities to feel and compare the different textures in their hands.

Out in Forest School, autumn inspired another activity as the children made their own leaf soup. Orange paint, leaves gathered outdoors and pots from the kitchen came together as they mixed, stirred and created their seasonal recipe.

From bark and leaves to mixing and making, it was a lovely way to spend time exploring the sights, textures and colours of the changing season.

🔵Spots, dots and all things round! 🔴

It was circles day at The Old Forge, and our Big Bears took on the purr-fect challenge, using cotton buds to give our cheetahs their spots!

Then came the balance game. Armed with nothing but spoons, little hands carefully scooped balls up and out of the water. Steady hands, plenty of concentration and that lovely determination to try again when a ball made its escape.

And would circles day be complete without ladybirds? We didn't think so. But there was a problem… ours had lost their spots!

Luckily, our Big Bears were on the case, counting the number buttons to work out exactly how many spots each ladybird needed. Phew!

A day of spotting, scooping, counting and creating with circles popping up everywhere we looked.

🚒 Well… we weren’t expecting that! 💚

Our Preschool Bears were on their way back to nursery after a walk to the park when a fire engine stopped right in front of them!

The crew came over and invited our Bears to climb aboard. With a little help up the steps, they got to explore inside and some even tried on the firefighters’ helmets. 🚒

Back at nursery, the excitement continued as we talked about firefighters, what they do and the people who help to keep us safe.

Sometimes the best nursery adventures are the ones you didn’t plan. 💚

🌈 A very colourful day with our Big Bears! 🎨
Our Big Bears celebrated Colouring Day with a morning full of colour, creativity and plenty of careful concentration.

First came a colour-matching challenge. Armed with a colour wheel, our Bears hunted around for objects to match each shade, looking closely, comparing colours and making some brilliant discoveries along the way. 🔎🌈
Then the crayons came out! 🖍️ We practised our pen control, carefully colouring inside different shapes while chatting about the shapes and colours we could see.

Matching, searching, colouring, talking and noticing a whole rainbow of learning wrapped up in one very colourful day. 💚

🧸 Teddy bears, tiny chefs and one rather brilliant picnic! 🥑💚

National Teddy Bear Day gave us the perfect excuse for a day packed with some of our favourite things!

Our Bears brought their much-loved teddies into nursery and proudly introduced them to their friends at circle time. There were stories to share, questions to ask and lots of listening as we discovered just why each bear was so special. 🧸

Then it was time to become DEN Little Chefs. 👩‍🍳 Little hands carefully chopped peppers, peeled hard-boiled eggs and mashed avocado, learning to use our tools safely and talking about the foods we were preparing along the way.

Egg and avocado were mixed together, wraps were made and there was only one thing left to do… have a Teddy Bears’ Picnic! 🧺

But no bear-themed day would be complete without a bear hunt. Shoes and socks came off as we squelched through squishy, squashy mud, ventured through the stumble-tripping forest and braved the swirling, whirling snowstorm on our sensory adventure. 🐾🌿
Talking, listening, chopping, peeling, mashing, tasting, touching and exploring.

Lots of fun. Lots of learning. And the sort of childhood memories we rather love making. 🐻💚

🧑‍🍳 Ready, steady… scones! 💚

Friday brought a little bit of baking magic as our Bears rolled up their sleeves and made their very own scones.

There was measuring, mixing, stirring and plenty of floury fingers as the children got stuck in and discovered how a handful of ingredients can become something rather delicious. 🥣

Baking together is full of little opportunities to count, follow instructions, take turns and build independence with the added excitement of getting to eat what you’ve made at the end!

Made by little hands and enjoyed with very big smiles. 😋

🇧🇷Big Bears are off to Brazil! 🦜☕️
Our Big Bears have been taking a little trip to Brazil — without even leaving the nursery! 🌎💚

We started with a colourful Brazilian flag sensory tray, exploring different textures and getting hands and bodies moving as we discovered what was hiding inside.

Then things got rather tropical! 🦜 We discovered some of the amazing wildlife found in Brazil before creating our own colourful parrots using paper plates, tissue paper and buttons. Plenty of sticking, placing and creating for those busy little fingers.

We also explored how Brazil is famous for growing coffee, before turning it into a maths challenge. Our Bears carefully counted out the right number of coffee beans into pots.

One morning. One country. So many ways to explore it. 🇧🇷
