Feeling Your Qi - Physical
Unlike simply participating in various rote resistance or aerobic calisthenics, martial art / qigong training seeks to improve the quality of body usage by using a limited set of choreography, that will be studied and practiced over the course of many years.
It is quality of alignment and joint articulation and not quantity of movements / techniques that will lead to improving balance, ease and range of motion, coordination, relaxation, and concentration. Taijiquan utilizes only one form; the traditional long form. Often shorter forms are utilized for this very reason.
This is why seeking quality instruction is an imperative. The body does not change overnight, but over the course of several years by applying a daily practice backed by a regular study with a teacher. Initial positive sensations of improvements, although encouraging, are only superficial. Soon these motivations fade from the mind, if they are not replaced by new discoveries and further encouraging improvements found along the path of practice.
Unfortunately today, much of the instruction offered is at a low level. Often times this is not merely the fault of the instructor, but the student's level of interest and engagement. People expect a lot from others, but offer little of themselves.
Depending how long a person has not engaged in movement practice is a major factor. In extreme cases, moving often brings up negative thoughts and this frustration breeds a self defeating attitude. They give up too quickly. They don't like how it feels. Good instruction can help a student break through these self generated barriers.
