🚗 Don’t Wait Until They’re Merging!

Driving on a dual carriageway? Here’s a tip that can make your driving safer and smoother 👇

When you see a slip road ahead, start anticipating cars joining the carriageway.

👀 Check your mirrors early.
🚗 Look well ahead.
↔️ Be prepared to create a safe gap if appropriate.

Remember, the driver joining the dual carriageway is trying to find a safe space in moving traffic. If you’ve spotted them early, you can give yourself more time and space to respond.

But don’t automatically move over or speed up to block them. Stay calm, maintain safe following distance and make a safe decision based on the traffic around you.

As a driver, don’t just react to what’s happening right now — anticipate what’s likely to happen next.

💡 Good driving is about seeing the situation develop before it becomes a problem.

Learners — this is WHY you should return to the left after overtaking!

You’ve safely overtaken the lorry in lane 1 and moved into lane 2. ✅

But now you’ve finished overtaking…

So why stay in the middle lane? 🤔

👉 The Highway Code says keep left unless overtaking and return to the left lane when it’s safe to do so. (GOV.UK⁠)

Because the left lane is your normal driving lane.

If you stay in the right-hand lane for too long when there’s no reason to be there and someone undertakes, you could possibly fail your driving test.

You approach a STOP junction…

✅ You slow down
✅ You look left and right
✅ You check for traffic

❌ But you don’t completely stop.

That would be a SERIOUS FAULT on a UK driving test.

Why? 👇

A STOP sign means the vehicle must come to a complete halt at the stop line (or before entering the junction if there is no line).

Even if the road looks clear, rolling through the junction is not acceptable because:

🚫 You may not have enough time to spot hidden hazards
🚫 Other road users expect you to stop
🚫 It shows you are not following a mandatory traffic sign
🚫 It creates unnecessary risk at the junction

As an examiner, I would expect the learner to:

✔️ Stop fully with the wheels no longer moving
✔️ Apply good observation after stopping
✔️ Look left, right, ahead, and left again if needed
✔️ Move off only when it is safe and clear

Remember:
🔴 STOP = stop.
Not “almost stop”.
Not “slow down and roll”.

One small habit like this can be the difference between PASS ✅ and FAIL ❌.

🚗 Driving Test Tip – Moving Off

Here’s a common situation that can catch learners out 👀

The learner checks, sees a van approaching, but still decides to move off and signal. The van then has to slow down or stop behind them.

❌ Why could this be a fault?
It’s not simply because they signalled. The issue is judgement and timing. If you’ve seen the vehicle approaching and moving off means the other driver has to stop or significantly change speed, it may be better to wait.

✅ What could you do better?
Observe → Assess → Wait if necessary → Re-check → Move off when safe and convenient.

Remember: A signal doesn’t give you priority! 🚦

Country side roads can change in an instant. 🛣️🚗

Sharp bends should always be anticipated early — look ahead for warning signs, hedges, tree lines, and limited visibility. The safest approach is to slow down before the bend, select an appropriate speed, and keep the car well positioned on your side of the road.
In this clip, the learner approached the bend slightly too fast. A bus appeared coming the other way and, because larger vehicles often need extra space around tight bends, it came very close to us. I had to take hold of the steering wheel to help maintain control and avoid a collision.
A slower approach would have given better control, more time to react, and allowed the car to stay neat and close to our side of the road.

Key lesson: Slow in, look through the bend, stay in your lane, and expect the unexpected — especially on narrow country roads.

🚗 Why can waving a pedestrian across be a serious fault?

It might seem polite to wave a pedestrian across the road, but during your driving test, you need to be careful.

If you beckon a pedestrian to cross, you could be encouraging them to move into a situation where you cannot be certain it’s safe — especially if there are other vehicles, cyclists or hazards that the pedestrian may not have seen.

As the driver, you must make sure it’s safe before proceeding and avoid giving signals that could put another road user at risk.

👉 A friendly wave can sometimes create a dangerous situation.

How to join a dual carriageway perfectly from a slip road 🚗💨

As you approach the slip road, check your mirrors and start building your speed.

Use the slip road to match the speed of the traffic already on the dual carriageway. Don’t wait until the end to decide where you’re going.

Look well ahead, identify a safe gap, check your mirrors and blind spot, then signal if necessary.

Once you’ve found your gap, merge smoothly and confidently into the left lane. Avoid slowing down unnecessarily or forcing your way into traffic.

Remember: Speed → Mirrors → Gap → Blind spot → Smooth merge.

That’s how you make a safe, controlled and confident dual carriageway join. 👌

Driving Examiner’s View 🚗⚠️

Learner entered the slip road but didn’t realise the lane was ending and failed to check mirrors early enough to judge the lorry’s speed and position. A safe gap was available, but they didn’t accelerate to match the traffic, so the lorry had to slow down and flash us in.

Why this is dangerous:

❌ Poor planning
❌ Joining too slowly
❌ Relying on another driver to create a gap

What should have happened:
✔️ Read the signs and road markings early
✔️ Check mirrors as soon as entering the slip road
✔️ Judge the gap early
✔️ Accelerate to match the dual carriageway traffic
✔️ Final right mirror check before merging
