⭐️ Are nursery rhymes stories? ⭐️

I was at an event at the weekend and while I was singing nursery rhymes with the children I heard someone say, “I thought this was supposed to be storytelling.”

Did you know that nursery rhymes are short stories?

For young children, these narrative songs are fantastic tools for developing foundational language, rhythm, and memory skills.

A story usually has characters and some kind of event or action. Some nursery rhymes fit this definition:
* Humpty Dumpty tells of a character who falls and cannot be put back together.
* Jack and Jill go up a hill, have an accident and come back down.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of attending a workshop by The Magic Lantern with OUTSIDE
The storytelling, music and shadow puppets captivated the children and adults!

We heard the rhyme of ‘The Owl and the P***y Cat’ and many stories including why the cockerel crows at the sun, how the cat got its purr and why dog and man live together.

The stories had many repeated actions and phrases which encouraged the little ones to join in as well as parts where they could make suggestions for the stories.

There was excitement, laughter and so much fun! It made my heart fill with joy that stories can create such magical moments. ✨

This week we met w w w wombat from the Animal Alphabet!
Our sensory story took us round and round the garden and we finished with a teddy bears picnic.
The little ones have been really fascinated with the picture book about babies.

🐭 This week we practised the letter w by singing wind the bobbin up, the wheels on the bus and Wee Willie Winkie with Music Mouse.
🦊 Phonic Fox brought along his friend Wombat and pinwheels and we sang w for windmill.
🧚‍♀️ We used imagination and went round the mulberry bush as we pretended to get ready for school. We looked in mirrors to check we had washed our faces properly, sang and played with oranges for breakfast, zipped up our zebra coats as we got dressed and pretended to drive to school with our toy cars.
🐻 We finished with a picture book about liking different types of books.
