Hazy Sunshine, with Scattered Showers and Fog at Times: The Participation of Vocational Subject Teachers in Career Guidance, presented by Alison Etches, a PhD researcher at the University of Wolverhampton.
This seminar will provide an overview of the draft findings from my PhD research project. The research was conducted with the understanding that further insights could be gained into how subject teachers assist their students with university- and graduate-career-related advice (HEIAG).
The study aimed to explore the role of vocational subject teachers (VSTs) of level 3 courses, such as BTECs, as university advisers for their students. Additionally, the research was carried out in three schools serving neighbourhoods identified by the POLAR measure as having low participation in higher education (LPNs), allowing for an exploration of the findings from a social justice perspective.

Date and time: Wednesday, 4 February 2026. 14.00 - 15.00
Location: Online
Presented by Sarra Jenkins
Understanding how young people navigate decisions about university pathways is central to careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) practice in schools. This webinar presents findings from her recent study on the extent to which parental values about higher education are transmitted to their children and how these shared or divergent values shape decision-making in a competitive, information-dense HE landscape.

Welcome to the iCeGS Annual Review for 2025.
During this year, we bid farewell to our esteemed leader, Professor Siobhan Neary. Her leadership, wisdom, and steady hand at the helm will be felt for a long time yet.
With Siobhan’s departure, Professor Tristram Hooley has returned as the Head of Centre (which he describes as ‘the best job in careers’). He is now working with the iCeGS team to map out the Centre’s next moves. The seas ahead may be choppy, but the compass is pointing firmly towards opportunity, curiosity, and the occasional bold manoeuvre.
The attached Annual Review captures a year of change, achievements, and no small amount of collective brainpower. It showcases research, teaching and impact on policy and practice and offers a snapshot of a Centre that’s stretching, learning, and gearing up for whatever comes next.
Thank you for coming along for the ride — and for continuing to support iCeGS as the next chapter gets underway.
Warm regards,
iCeGS Team
