Anne Lamott once said 'Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.' Take time this holiday to unplug, to spend time away from your laptop and to try and think about something other than school. Give children the same chance to shut off from school, they'll return more refreshed and ready to learn.

Join me each Friday morning for an easy activity to help to reduce anxiety.

When was the last time you settled down to do a jigsaw or a puzzle in a book. I discovered a whole host of Japanese logic puzzles during lockdown - Hanjie and Mosaic were my favourites. It's a wonderful way of making your brain concentrate on something else and making you sit still for a few moments.

Self care is so important, but it's sometimes difficult to access in the classroom. Use the ideas I share each Wednesday to help you and your children to experience a little self care

Picture the scene, I'm in a Y2 classroom and the teacher has just turned to little Sam and said 'Well done!' with a big beaming smile on her face. Unfortunately, Sam had just kicked the boy sitting next to her after an unkind comment and was probably now thinking that the teacher was praising her for sticking up for herself.

Well done, while great for improving confidence, doesn't always help children to know exactly what they're good at!

Specific praise is far more effective. Always start with their name, so that they know it's directed at them, accompanied by a well done (we still want to build confidence), and then swiftly followed by a reason for your praise and be specific. If they had listened really carefully, tell them. If they had persevered when they found it difficult, tell them. You're reinforcing these skills which will increase their resilience and self-regulation.

It also has the added bonus of reinforcing the behaviours you want to see to anyone within earshot!

Join me each Tuesday for a tip to get you thinking about how the environment you create in your classroom affects your learners. Be the change you want to see!

A little something to think about - take some time to reflect on how this might impact on your educational practices.

In this mindful moment, we;re going to breathe and move like a tree. Again, this can be adapted depending on what your class need. If they need energising, they're going to move like a tree in a storm and breath to the ends of their branches to give them energy. If they need calming, they can be a winter tree that's covered in snow, the branches feel heavy and they need to breathe strongly to have the strength to carry the weight.

Practising mindfulness activities can make us calmer and more grounded and improve our physical well-being. Join me for your own moment of mindfulness each Monday afternoon and then share the ideas with your class.

We all need a little reminder of how wonderful we are - stick around here for long enough and I'll get you to believe in yourself too!
