'It's a bad workman blames his tools.' As they say!
When you're struggling to get the photos your products deserve, it's easy to think you need to go shopping!
Of course there are some amazing photography tools available that will definitely help you take better photos. As professional photographers, we have many, many useful accessories and often get tempted to buy more!
But when we first started our photography journey, shooting antiques for our Etsy store, we bought some proper useless tat, believing it would help! Needless to say, it didn't.
Until you learn to understand why your photographs aren't great, you can't know what you need to do to improve them. Simple tools, like soft boxes, grids and diffusers, only work if you know how and when to use them.
So before you spend money on equipment, invest in improving your understanding of basic photography techniques. Even if you're shooting with a smartphone, this knowledge will give you your biggest leap forward ever.

Etsy reports that 90% of buyers consider product photographs to be the MOST important factor influencing their purchasing decisions.
So good e-commerce photos are really important.
But good e-commerce photography is hard, and most entrepreneurs have a mountain of things to do, so trying to find time to learn camera skills is a challenge.
We've designed a course SPECIFICALLY for people photographing PRODUCTS (not people or places) using a PHONE CAMERA (not a DSLR, Mirrorless or Compact Camera). Being so focused means this course can get you meaningful results in under two hours.

For some reason, everyone seems to be talking about photo editing this week! If we've learnt one thing, it's that a BAD edit, however trivial it may seem, can impact your reputation.
If you're selling products online, that's a GENUINE problem. But it's not always easy (again, as some have found out recently!). The temptation to hit the 'AUTO' button can be overwhelming. But the trouble with an auto edit, and indeed any smartphone camera automation, is it's not designed for product shots, as these images show.
A phone camera is tuned for capturing memories, and for most people that's faces and places, not accurately represented toiletries!
In our Smartphone Product Photography Course, we explain all the editing tools in your phone, and show how they can be used to take your images to the next level.

π Often, getting the best photograph of a product is about attention to tiny details. π
At first glance, these photos may look identical, but if you look particularly at the lace in the left hand shot, you'll see the detail is much clearer. This isn't about focus, camera shake or the camera we used. Both were shot using a smartphone, on exactly the same settings. This difference comes from our old favourite - lighting! π‘π‘
The image on the left was shot with HARD light, so the texture in both fabrics looks much more attractive. Hard lighting isn't right for every product, but for showing the fine details of a texture, it wins hands-down. π
You can learn more about hard and soft lighting and how to achieve each, in our new Smartphone Product Photography Course.

π What are the key lighting choices for shooting e-commerce shots with a smartphone? π‘
Most professional product photographers would use high powered studio strobes β‘, but you can't trigger any kind of flash with a smartphone, so you have to use continuous lighting. That brings a few extra problems, so can you still get effective lighting?
YES - DEFINITELY!! πΎ π
But different types of lighting will get you different types of photos, and understanding what you need is important. Buying the wrong equipment can be frustrating, time consuming and expensive.
Our new Smartphone Product Photography Course will talk you through the options and what makes them different, so you can make an informed choice. Without hours of scrolling and swearing!

βDo you know if you need hard lighting or soft light for your product shots?β
No? Well, neither do we!!
We've no idea, because there is no right or wrong answer. It depends on your product, the style you're looking for and your own personal taste.
But you can't make those choices, and create photos that show your products at their very best, unless you understand why your light is hard or soft and how you control it.
In our Smartphone Product Photography Course, you'll learn the difference, how to achieve each and when to use them. You'll see the difference lighting makes on product photographs and how to achieve the results you're looking for your own products. All using a SMARTPHONE.
