Ever wondered why men's and women's clothing buttons up on different sides? Have you even noticed?
The reason behind this goes back to the 13th century, when buttons were first introduced. They were very expensive and only the wealthy could afford them, so, being a wealthy lady, you could afford the new style buttons. But remember, at that time, wealthy ladies did not dress themselves but we're dressed by a ladies maid. Taking into account that most people are right handed, it made practical sense to have the buttons on the left side of shirts, jackets etc. so that a right handed person facing you could dress you more easily.
Men, on the other hand have buttons on the right hand side and this was to allow easier access to any hidden weapons tucked into your shirt or under your armpit, as, again, most people are right handed.
Why is a lady almost always depicted as being positioned on the left arm of a man when out walking, getting married or at a concert etc? Again it ensures that the man's dominant weapons hand is left free for defence
Why do we drive on the left side of the road? Again, to allow your weapons hand to be towards anyone coming towards you from the opposite direction
Most customs, traditions, and habits, when analysed, stem from a martial, protective outlook, or sometimes purely for simplicity
