In this guitar tutorial, we’re learning Rave On by Buddy Holly – a brilliant introduction to classic 1950s rock ’n’ roll rhythm guitar.

The song is built around just three familiar chords – G, C and D – but we’ll use a couple of different rhythm approaches to bring the song to life. It’s a fun rhythm guitar lesson and a great example of how you can get much more out of a handful of simple open chords by changing the way you play them.

In this week's guitar tutorial we are tackling episode 4 of the guitar solo roadmap. This guitar solo taken from Nirvana’s Smells like teen spirit is a great example of how I visualize scales on the fretboard to know what notes I need to play in plenty of time.

In this guitar lesson, we're breaking down the iconic Californication guitar solo by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. More importantly, we're using it to develop one of the most expressive techniques in lead guitar playing: controlled guitar bends.

If you've ever found that your bends sound rushed, inconsistent, or out of tune, this lesson will help you improve your control. We'll focus on bending accurately to pitch, holding the bend with confidence, and releasing the string smoothly and in time with the music.

This clip of Ryan and Steve was taken at our recent Level 2 Blues & Rock Improvisation Workshop.

If you’re ready to move beyond the pentatonic box, the next Level 2 workshop takes place on September 5th at our studio in Denby Dale.

It’s designed for guitarists who are already comfortable with basic blues and pentatonic improvisation but want to take their solos further.

We’ll explore major and minor scales, Aeolian sounds, arpeggios, target notes, blending major and minor pentatonics, and connecting scales across the fretboard.

Most importantly, we’ll put these ideas into practice to create more melodic and confident solos.

Yesterday we ran our first in person Level 2 Blues & Rock improvisation course at the studio!

In the all day workshop we built on the foundations learned in the level 1 course by expanding knowledge on Triads, Scales, playing over the changes and so much more!
