This is something I know many parents worry about when their child is struggling at school.
We often hear about famous people with dyslexia; Richard Branson, Maggie Aderin-Pocock, Jamie Oliver, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom and Noel Gallagher are just a few.
And yes, itโs reassuring to see people with dyslexia doing so well.
But actually, I hear something during assessments that I find just as reassuring.
When we talk about family history, a parent will often say:
Sometimes itโs Mum, Grandad, an aunt or an older sibling. School was difficult for them, but theyโve gone on to build successful careers, run businesses, work in creative or practical fields, or simply find something they are really good at.
Dyslexia can make aspects of school hard. Reading, spelling, writing, remembering information and working at speed can all take more effort.
But those difficulties donโt tell us how intelligent or capable a child is or what their future will look like.
Dyslexic people can also have strengths in areas such as problem-solving, creativity, visual thinking and seeing the bigger picture. Of course, every dyslexic person is different.
In all likelihood,
What we can do now is make the journey easier: understand whatโs causing the difficulties, make sure the right support is in place and, importantly, protect their confidence.
Because struggling with literacy at 8, 10 or 12 does not tell us where that child will be at 18, 25 or 40.
