It already looks grown out, so surely it should cost less.

Ok, I hear ya! BUT... you’re paying for a colourist who’s actually invested in learning how to do this properly.

Someone who looks at you as an individual and maps out what will work and what won’t, not just back to back foils they’re repeating all day.

You’re paying for a complete, bespoke colour service that might involve multiple techniques in one sitting.

Yes, it’s more of an investment per visit… Buuut you’re spending less time in the chair overall, so… long term, you’re actually SAVING money.

Why foil up to the parting instead of mohawk?

Foiling horizontally helps me visualise the colour better than a mohawk does.

Yes, you can leave gaps in a mohawk section but my millennial brain always ends up packing in way too many and suddenly I’m panic shadowing a full head blonde! Whoops!

Foiling this way lets me mix up my weave size as I get closer to the parting and choose the gap between foils depending on how lived in I want the result to be.

If a client wants full coverage blonde, that’s when I’ll mohawk. Otherwise, this is my go-to.

Just a little tip if you’re a classic over-foiler like me.

Hairdressers, how many times have you discretely hidden a ball of shedded hair out of sight of your client? 👀

This gets more common the harder you push for that bright “Instagram blonde” that lots more clients are requesting.

Ideally, you’re picking out the more vulnerable strands as you go but it can still happen on hair that should be able to withstand a bit more bleaching.

To be clear, this isn’t about over-processing a full head or causing irreparable damage. It’s about being honest with clients who want the brightest blondes that there can be a small “blonding tax”, the odd strand here and there giving way, even when everything’s been done properly.

Even the global educators are being more transparent about this lately which has made me realise we need to talk about this a bit more. It doesn’t mean you’re a ‘bad colourist’.

Hair isn’t uniformly strong along its whole length… one weak point from previous colour history or heat damage, can give way under a lift the rest of the hair handles completely fine.

There’s a difference worth knowing though. Chewing gum hair, that stretchy, gummy texture, means the whole strand has broken down fairly evenly. It’s severely over-processed. This isn’t that… this hair still has elasticity when wet.

Some hair stays fairly healthy-looking through the blonding process, some doesn’t.

That’s not always something you can predict or control.

This is worth showing your clients too, not just other stylists. It helps them understand what going lighter can actually involve.

We’re having an unusually warm summer in the UK and it’s not great news for our blonde clients 👀

More sun means more warmth creeping into colour that left the salon bright and neutral. It’s a conversation worth having with your clients before their next appointment.

We don’t need to baffle clients with the full science, although some genuinely find it interesting. But guiding them through proper sun protection goes a long way, UV spray, leave-in conditioner with UV filters, a hat in peak hours, rinsing straight after swimming.

I recommend mine come back between appointments for a gloss refresh and a conditioning treatment too 🤍
