December is here, and we can’t believe how quickly it’s come around! 🌟 The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity:

✨ A special visit from our staff on sabbatical, who hosted an inspiring Black Heritage workshop.
🕯️ A lantern-making workshop thanks to Dover Foundry—our students can’t wait to light up the parade!
🎨 The craft frenzy is on as students prep for their big sale.
🤝 Our staffing committee has been hard at work interviewing new candidates.
🌧️ Stormy weather couldn’t stop forest school—our amazing leader brought the outdoors in with bird feeder and woodworking activities.
🍳 Student-led cooking is thriving this term, with the kitchen buzzing and no staff help needed!

We kicked off these two weeks with a burst of enthusiasm after the half-term break. As the winter chill settled in, the pace slowed down a bit, with a few sniffles making the rounds 🤧💤. But we’re thrilled to have Forest School back—nothing like a brisk walk in nature to shake off the winter slumber!

Our Community Meetings have been a highlight, sparking some brilliant discussions! 🗣️ We witnessed democracy in action, with new proposals that ruffled a few feathers—true engagement at its best.

Meanwhile, our creative spirits were busy too! Craft students rolled up their sleeves and gave the craft room a much-needed makeover, organizing, labeling, and creating a space that’s now a joy to work in.

Here’s to a productive start to winter, embracing the season and the community spirit that keeps us warm!

We're Recruiting!!

The Staffing Committee (students and staff) were hard at work last half term getting ready for our recruitment drive to support the large increase in students who have recently joined our community. They have agreed, proposed and successfully passed a new procedure for recruiting at our community meeting and are now looking forward to shortlisting and interviewing the candidates.

Have you ever had your child tell you about something that you had absolutely no idea how or where they learnt it?

Young people's knowledge is vast and goes far beyond the organised subjects they are taught. Imagine if we took into account all a young person knew. Imagine if the individuality and depth of that knowledge was acknowledged and celebrated!! Imagine how positive that would be for their self-esteem! 🙌🙌

This week at Sudbury has been full of delicious creations and creative energy!

🍜 Our cooking group whipped up some amazing chow mein and pizzas, filling the air with mouth-watering aromas! 🍕 The students have really been diving into their culinary projects, and it's been a treat for everyone!

🫧 A special shoutout to our wonderful volunteer staff who fascinated the students with bubbles as big as them! It was pure magic seeing their faces light up with joy.

🎨 Our hardworking crafts group has been pouring their hearts into a fundraiser to raise money for much-needed sewing and craft resources. They’ve been making beautiful scrunchies but ran into a little hiccup this week when their last sewing machine stopped working. But the setback didn’t dampen their spirits! 💪 They’ve adjusted their plans and are now making badges while pushing the fundraiser forward by a few weeks. The determination and creativity of these students is inspiring!

Real life. Real decisions.

It takes time but balancing your own wants and needs with those of the others around you is important learning. Only with the freedom to learn for yourself through the decisions you make, can you become the most authentic you.

Just like adults, young people learn from both their successes and from their mistakes. They learn from the consequences of their own actions. Being in community with others who are also learning and growing, helps to grow an atmosphere of understanding and acceptance.

Weekly Update:

Feast your eyes on the mouthwatering creations our students have been cooking up these last two weeks! 👨‍🍳👩‍🍳 The Pepperpot Café made a delicious return and was a complete hit—fully booked and buzzing with excitement.

While the cooking took center stage, behind the scenes, our students were busy with all the usual favorites: play, German lessons, arts & crafts, sewing, music, and even some D&D adventures. 🎨🎶🎲

Staff also spent time reviewing the past four weeks, especially focusing on how our new students are settling in during their practice period. 📋🔍 So, we didn’t snap as many pics as usual—but don’t worry, we’re saving some gems for the yearbook! 📸✨

Another wonderful Peter Gray quote from our all-time favourite book 'Free to Learn'.

Watching young people play is one of the most rewarding activities as staff here at East Kent Sudbury. Listening to the constant flow, change of ideas, creativity, imagination and emotional regulation is often awe-inspiring. Self-directed learning environments such as ours recognise play as THE most important work of children. 🤩🤸‍♀️🎮🎲🪇

Weekly Update

This week at East Kent Sudbury, the warm and sunny weather invited lots of outdoor fun! Games like man-hunt, 52 bunker, and card games kept everyone on their toes, while the music room buzzed with recording sessions and the practice of our new booking system. Our newly-formed cooking groups had their first meeting, planning delicious ideas for the term ahead. With most of the action outside, the building was unusually quiet—echoing the peaceful atmosphere of the week!
