There are many ways to learn guitar, including teaching yourself on YouTube or downloading the latest mobile phone app. These are useful tools, but learning with a private tutor ensures you won't waste any time sifting through countless videos on YouTube, wondering which one will help. I can identify your strengths and weaknesses and customise your lessons accordingly, setting clear and achievable goals. Another great benefit of private lessons is simply being able to ask questions about anything you want when you want. PVG CERTIFIED

Well, that’s another one ticked off — genuinely one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to! 🎸

The Guitar Dreams Final Show at Cameron House, Loch Lomond, with performances from:

John Goldie
Robbie McIntosh
Greg Koch
Guthrie Trapp
Mary Spender
Mike Stern
Leni Stern
and the incredible Eric Johnson

What a privilege to see that amount of talent on one stage. Absolutely world-class musicianship from start to finish.

There were a couple of funny moments too. 😂

I went to the bar at one point and John Goldie and Robbie McIntosh were standing right beside me. Perfect opportunity to say hello… and I completely froze. 😂 Too chicken to say anything!

Then later I went for a p*e and who ends up standing next to me? Guthrie Trapp. 😂 Probably not the ideal place to strike up a conversation, so I decided to leave that one as well!

Nonetheless, an absolutely superb night and one I won’t forget in a hurry.

Seeing players of that calibre up close is something else. 🎸👏

30 years of playing guitar right-handed… and now I’m learning to play left-handed! 🎸🤯

After finger injuries forced me to rethink things, I decided to take on the challenge of switching sides and basically relearning the instrument from scratch.

Here’s Progress Video #3 of my epic left-handed quest 😂

Still a long way to go, but it’s slowly starting to feel more natural. It’s been a seriously interesting experience going from an experienced player to feeling like a beginner again!

Onwards! 🤘🎸

🎸 LEARN TO BE A MUSICIAN — NOT JUST A COPYCAT GUITAR PLAYER 🎸

One thing I really try to drive home to students at Stevie McLean Guitar School is the importance of learning to be a musician, not simply someone who can copy what they see on a screen.

Social media is full of guitar players. There are literally millions of impressive clips on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube — and let’s face it, with editing, multiple takes, sp*ed changes and miming, not everything you see online is necessarily what it appears to be.

But even being able to perfectly copy a difficult solo doesn’t automatically make someone a well-rounded musician.

Can you play in time with a drummer?
Can you lock in with a bass player?
Can you learn a song and play it from beginning to end with a band?
Can you improvise when someone gives you a key?
Do you understand what key you’re actually in?
Can you communicate with other musicians using terms they understand?

That’s musicianship.

This is why I put so much emphasis on scales, rhythm, timing, theory, ear training and improvisation, alongside learning the songs and solos that make guitar fun.

Scales aren’t just boring exercises to run up and down. They teach you where the notes are, how music fits together and eventually give you the freedom to create your own music rather than constantly copying someone else.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with learning your favourite solos — we do plenty of that! But the goal should be to understand what you’re playing and develop the skills to take that knowledge somewhere else.

Because ultimately, if you want to play with other musicians, join a band, write music, improvise or walk into a rehearsal and actually know what’s going on…

Learn the instrument. Learn the language. Become a musician. 🎸

🎸 Arron with a few tunes he’s been working on recently!

Great to see the progress coming along and the playing getting more confident with each lesson. 👏🎶

Keep up the great work, Arron! 🤘🎸
