Professional drivers risk additional sanctions if they behave irresponsibly behind the wheel, as the Highway Code’s hierarchy of road users places those in charge of larger vehicles under greater accountability.

This can be seen during a recent court case, where a lorry driver from Colchester was banned from driving for three years, after he was found to have been drug-driving without car insurance in his private car.

Roads policing inspector James Freeman has stated that:

“Police and the courts take a dim view of drug driving, particularly where the driver is a professional. These individuals have an added responsibility because of their job and the vehicles they operate”.
