What a fab service from D&D Painting Service - love the way the colours turned out, and was really nice to start the term with a fresh new look. Can not recommend them enough, great service & attention to detail and the space was left clean ready to set back up

We do not serve nuts to our children & if they are sent in packed lunches we will return them home, thank you for your understanding with this

While many foods could cause choking, some foods pose more of a risk than others.

Here’s why whole nuts are considered high-risk for small children and should be avoided for under 5s:

• Their hard texture and slippery, oily coating make it easier for them to slip down the throat before being fully chewed
• A whole nut can completely block a small child’s narrow airway. This can cut off their oxygen supply completely.
• Small children are still developing the coordination needed to breathe and swallow at the same time. Even with constant supervision, an unexpected cough, laugh, or gasp while eating can easily suck a slippery nut directly into the lungs or airway.

That’s why it’s recommended to grind or crush them into more manageable pieces for your young child.

Our children here at the nursery loved being part of the pilot and 'Feeding Colin' at snack time. The feedback from our pilot was as follows "The Colin the Caddy initiative has successfully embedded sustainability and healthy lifestyle messages into everyday practice. Through practical experiences, discussion, and active participation, children have developed a greater understanding of food waste recycling, environmental responsibility, healthy eating, and independence." Good luck to all the other nurseries joining the food recycling scheme this term.

Nursery-age children are learning all about food waste recycling thanks to Colin the caddy!

Every nursery in Darlington has received a free educational pack, which includes a kitchen caddy (Colin) and outdoor food waste bin, information for parents and educators about the council’s new food waste scheme which launched in early June.

The pack includes special activities and a book to help children understand the new system and why it is so important. The activities are designed to make children think about where food comes from, how to safely prepare food, and how to dispose of leftover food or peelings through the food waste recycling scheme.

Many nurseries have chosen to add the kitchen caddy and outdoor bin to their role play areas so that children routinely use the equipment as part of their play and the feedback from both adults and children has been positive.

Colin the caddy packs are now also available for childminders to borrow for free from Darlington Libraries, Crown Street

Libby McCollom, cabinet member for local services, said: “This is a great way to teach everyone why reducing food waste and recycling is so important.

“Nurseries have welcomed Colin the caddy and have used the activities to reinforce sustainability and healthy lifestyle messages in everyday play. It is great that childminders can now borrow a Colin the caddy activity pack from the library to help encourage the children in their care to think about the environment and healthy eating.”
