Learned It, Living It - Darlington College’s very own podcast - is in the can, and we can’t wait to share Episode 19 with you!

Episode 19 welcomes Junior Masandi from Taste of Africa North East, alongside Dec, Student Engagement Officer here at Darlington College, to talk about our upcoming A Taste of Africa event, taking place in Central Point on Thursday 15 October, as well as Black History Month and the wider enrichment opportunities available to all our students.

The conversation explores how we encourage students to learn it and live it simultaneously during their time with us. Enrichment is about much more than what happens in the classroom - it’s about developing confidence, life skills, new interests and experiences, while creating opportunities for students to meet new people and feel a genuine sense of belonging within our college community.

Junior also shares the story and work of Taste of Africa North East, which has spent more than 20 years bringing communities together, celebrating African and Caribbean culture and heritage, and helping to promote understanding through events, education and community activities. This Black History Month, we’re bringing a celebration of African culture, creativity, heritage and identity to Darlington College with our Taste of Africa Showcase.

Emergency Services Day 2026 was packed with excitement at our Childcare Centre! 🚒🚑

To mark Emergency Services Day on Wednesday 9 September, the children were thrilled to welcome the Fire Brigade – with a special surprise visit from an ambulance crew too!

The children loved meeting members of our local emergency services, exploring the ambulance, hearing the sirens, seeing the blue lights and even having a go with the fire hose. There were plenty of smiles, laughs and giggles throughout the visit – and one of our college students even got an unexpected car wash! 💦🚗

A huge thank you to our local emergency services for taking the time to visit and creating such an exciting and memorable experience for the children. 💙💚

Nail Your Next Skill! 💅

Looking to develop your skills in nail technology? Our City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Nail Technology is a 12-week, part-time course starting NEXT WEEK at Darlington College.

Perfect for beginners or those looking to add nail technology to an existing skillset, you’ll learn:
💅 Preparing natural nails
💅 Tip application and blending
💅 Nail shaping and hard gel application
💅 Finishing and infill techniques
💅 Safe removal methods

You’ll also cover essential health and safety, complete assessments to industry standards and work towards a fully accredited City & Guilds qualification.

The qualification can complement skills in areas such as hairdressing, make-up artistry and beauty therapy, or provide a stepping stone towards our Level 3 Nail Services Diploma and opportunities in nail studios, self-employment or freelance work.

Shining a light on su***de safety.

We were pleased to welcome Sophie Gould, Education and Training Lead from The Headlight Project, back to Darlington College to deliver an important su***de safety session with our students.

Sophie encouraged students to challenge some of the myths and stigma surrounding su***de, recognise potential warning signs and understand the life events that can affect a person’s wellbeing.

The session also explored the importance of checking in on those around us, talking openly, knowing what to say and understanding where to turn for support – as well as the protective role that connection, physical activity, hopefulness and life skills can play.

Thank you to Sophie and The Headlight Project for creating a safe space for an important conversation and helping our students better understand how we can all look out for ourselves and each other. 💙💚

Enrichment activities at Darlington College are designed to enhance learners’ personal development, creativity, confidence and motivation.

After returning from the summer break, our Level 3 Electrical learners had been back for a few weeks, which can often feel demanding as they settle back into college life.

To support their wellbeing and engagement, Student Engagement Officer Dec introduced dedicated time away from the classroom, giving learners the opportunity to take part in team building activities, have fun and reconnect as a group.

They visited The Padel Casa in Darlington, the session provided learners with a chance to reset and recharge, helping them return to the classroom feeling refreshed, motivated and ready to learn.
