Often, when we talk about ‘nature connection’ or Deep Ecology, we miss out the human species. And yet here we are, in an animal body, born of evolution just like the oak, the lizard or the chimpanzee. For generations we have distanced ourselves from our own ‘deep ecology’. Today there are exciting new developments – in fields as diverse as dance, science, health, leadership and contemporary ritual – that can help us ‘re-member’ our selves. Waking up our embodied awareness also gives us and our participants access to deeper connection, somatic intelligence, health and creativity. Toning these muscles of sensate awareness takes practice and is different for each individual, so this introductory workshop offers simple tools, exercises and inquiry questions to tailor to your own work setting.

‘The shortest distance between one human being and another….is a story’

Rabbi Shem Tov

OVERVIEW
A foundation in telling traditional stories.

Narrative skills are an increasingly valued part of an educators toolkit, applied to great effect in all sorts of settings and with a diverse range of client-groups. The craft of storytelling can be broken down into some fundamentals which once distinguished can assist the rapid improvement for those wishing to make use of it either as professional storytellers, or to blend in with presentation skills they already have.

Finding the right story at the right time is also a key area that the course will consider as well offering some coaching for individual work. Participants will then emerge from this enlivening and empowering process with tales to tell, and more confidence and understanding of how, why and where to tell stories.

For adventurous teens aged 13-16 years, offering a unique opportunity to learn or hone essential survival skills, connect with nature, and make lifelong friends.

Why choose Forest Outlaws?

There are plenty of studies evidencing the well being benefits of nature connection e.g. increased resilience, more regulated emotion and the ability to relax, reduced depression, anxiety, and stress however according to new research from the RSPB and the University of Essex as children get older and move into teenage years their connectedness with nature drops away and in particular mid teenagers feel less connected to nature than any other group.

WildWise aims to instill a love of nature from an early age and to sustain and nurture that interest over the years by offering fun and challenging programmes that support that connection into adulthood and beyond. Our Forest Rangers camp is our ever popular nature immersion camp on Dartmoor for 8-12 year olds. This new Forest Outlaws programme aims to continue that journey offering activities, skills and challenges and a depth of experience geared towards older children.

03/07/2026

Wild Time programmes offer girls and young women an opportunity to ‘grow’ alongside experienced and qualified outdoorswomen to learn bushcraft skills, build confidence, develop a sense of self and have fun outdoors.

✨Why is this important now?✨

Young people’s mental health and wellbeing has never been so important – we hear much about the crisis of mental health among teenagers and recent UK statistics (young minds UK) show just how big the problem. This is mirrored globally. The challenges and worries of Gen Z in some ways (e.g. social media, climate change, covid) may be unique but these sit alongside the typical developmental challenges which come with this stage of life.

✨What will we be doing?✨

For this camp we will bring a group of girls together to learn new skills and face challenges in the wild; to explore the land by day and night, adventure across moor, woods and rivers to learn more about who they are and what they want from their lives on the threshold of young adulthood.

The adventure includes inner and outdoor challenges, bushcraft, wilderness survival skills, group games, wild walks, environmental art and crafts, and culminates in a final quest! We will cook on open fires, sleep under the stars, share stories as well as just hang out together in the peace and beauty of the wilderness.

✨How will the camp be?✨

This is a relatively small programme – typically for between 8-12 girls. This encourages the group to gel and helps the participants to feel supported and develop a sense of community.

✨Where will we be?✨

Our private venue is a wild riverside meadow on Dartmoor near to Newbridge. The facilities are basic; shelter and toilet tents are temporarily erected for the duration of the camp. Full details and directions will be made available after booking.

“This is an amazing experience which not only helps boost your child’s confidence, it will give them a life changing experience which they will never forget, getting up close to nature in one of the most beautiful parts of the country. It is also led by a really impressive set of outdoor education leaders who clearly know exactly what they are doing. It is a great investment in your boy’s future.”

What is Wolf Pack?

The ‘Wolf Pack’ programme recognises that boys of a certain age need challenges, adventures, risks and role-models. Our programme, this year delivered across 5 modules, facilitates a group of young men on a journey of discovery. Our aim is to make the most of what the natural world can offer with an exciting programme of meaningful activity that will develop skills, confidence and leadership potential.

We invite you to come and learn some new skills, expand your awareness, develop yourself, make new friends, tackle challenges, have some great fun, be surrounded by the power of nature, and maybe take an important step or two on the road towards manhood.

Participants will have the opportunity to get close to nature, to relax, grow up a bit, discover more about themselves, and be energised and inspired by some quality time out in the wilds of the Westcountry!

Where will we be?

The adventure begins with a walkabout on Dartmoor, travels the Dart river by Canadian canoe from Totnes towards the sea, visits the wild coastline (around East Prawle to East Portlemouth), includes a walkabout on Dartmoor and completes with an adventure in the woods in the Dart Valley.

Join us for a 3-part immersion into the enchantment of the dark, the forgotten realm of our contemporary existence.

🌓 What is Shadowlands?

This programme is a threshold-crossing immersion to aquaint ourselves with both the constituency of the night-time – its nocturnal denizens and its cosmic events – as well as meeting the shadow within.

On the night trail we will experience awe and wonder, fear and trepidation, insight and revelation and cultivate an apprenticeship with shadowlands to enable us to begin a courtship with the night, transforming it from persecutor to ally, finding sanctuary and refuge. The night gives us a ‘horizon further than we can see’ (David Whyte), and to romance the darkness, we will guide you with nightwalks and sit-spots, star treks and vigils, ceremony and enquiry, accompanied by a glittering treasure bag full of stories and songs and poems.

The course journey will invite a slowing down, learning night languages, and bring us out of our modern exile to take our rightful place as a constituent of the night.

✨ Who is the course aimed at?

This trail is not for everyone, it will be at times demanding and mysterious, playful and intimate, with an endgame of transformation, whether that be in your relationship to the dark, the wild or yourself. You will need resilience and self-responsibility, to navigate the physical challenges of nightwalking (no great distance, but rough paths), of adverse weather, initiative to engage with the core routines and assignments inbetween modules. Participants must therefore have good physical and mental health to meet the demands of the programme. A willingness to apprentice to Mystery and Uncertainty will definitely be an asset.

If you long for a deeper kinship to nature and community, and are willing to take risks and explore the frontier beyond your comfort zone, then this programme will perhaps align with your aspirations.

Support and provocation will come via your guides all of whom have crossed this threshold in different ways.

The search for our Seasonal Assistants for 2026 has begun.

The Seasonal Assistant role is an exciting opportunity for someone with enthusiasm for nature, outdoor life, and making a positive difference. Acting as a support to WildWise instructors, you will play a central part in the smooth running of camps and events. This position offers significant exposure to outdoor learning practice and is a valuable apprenticeship in environmental and outdoor education.

Seasonal Assistants get exchange places on Call of the Wild, our year long foundation programme in Outdoor leadership, plus access to all of our short training courses.

“There were so many highlights of my year as a Seasonal Assistant with WildWise that it’s impossible to choose – partaking in the Call of the Wild programme was a gift that changed the course of my life and who I am, for the infinite better! But the practical learning of being an assistant took the teaching to a much deeper level, as you work alongside a variety of experienced facilitators and get to see what makes it all work behind the scenes.”
