Makey Makey Dough Pianos! This was such a fun session of investigating conductors and insulators, then using what had been learnt to make flour dough pianos.

The children enjoyed making the most unusual shaped piano keys and then creating their own music.😁🎼🎵🎹🎶 Well done to all those who took part.✨

How to make your DT projects more exciting...

Don’t just say build a boat - instead say we’ve been stranded on an island and need to make a boat to escape!😮

Don’t just say build a bridge - instead say we’re trapped on the wrong side of Rock canyon and we need to escape the pirates!🏴‍☠️

Suddenly it’s a far more exciting way to spend a morning or afternoon doing DT, problem solving, designing and building.

Design Technology isn’t just making it’s so much more. Here’s 5 ways children think like engineers:

1. They ask questions.
2. They test ideas.
3. They solve problems.
4. They improve designs.
5. They never stop experimenting.

Get making with something you probably already have in the kitchen… Foil! Grab a sheet and get creating. Make a boat, a raft or a canoe and test how well it floats.

1st - Do a wave test - whoosh the water gently with your hand to see if it stays upright.

2nd - Test it’s strength/buoyancy by adding some weight eg coins, small pebbles, buttons, dice etc.

3rd - Remake and repeat!

World War 2 Home Ed Day - The mission was set “Operation Night Signal”. Light bulb clothes peg Morse Code Tappers were made and then put to action in the dark to transmit top secret messages!👀

Have the children ever gone to make with a cardboard box but can’t get past seeing all the writing etc to be able to imagine it being something different? Or maybe they make something awesome but when you come to painting it all those words can still be seen?

Have a go at turning it inside out. It’d be great to see what you make if you have a go at it.😎

Boomerangs! When a student asked if we could make boomerangs we just had to give it a go! These were great fun to make and test. There were 3 different types/shapes of boomerangs, which included left and right handed ones from Australia, card and wooden ones made in the studio and a card cross boomerang. One class had time at the end of their session to go down to the park together and test them out. They definitely flew through the air with grace, but as for returning it was not such a sure thing. Even the ones from Australia were tricky. There’s definitely a way to throw them and even after watching some videos for tips it was still tricky.

Even though they didn’t return we still had fun and learnt a lot about boomerangs in general as well as how to shape and smooth the wood to get good “foils” on the sides to help them be more aerodynamic.
