Alumni and Parent Drinks Event at the National Liberal Club

Thanks to the continued generosity of our alumni, we are fortunate each year to host a special gathering at one of London’s distinguished private members’ clubs.

This year, we were delighted to hold our annual club event at the National Liberal Club, thanks to the kind support of David and Michael Hodson. Set within an iconic building at the heart of Whitehall, the evening welcomed over 100 alumni, parents, teachers and guests, who arrived via the Club’s grand marble staircase to the first-floor reception rooms.

Founded in 1882 by Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, the National Liberal Club has long served as a political and social hub. Its magnificent Alfred Waterhouse-designed clubhouse has stood at 1 Whitehall Place since 1887, providing an elegant and historic setting for our gathering.

The event brought together a wonderfully diverse group from across the Trinity community, with alumni spanning the classes of 1963 through to 2025, alongside parents and both current and former members of staff. Guests gathered in the David Lloyd George Room, where familiar faces and new connections alike were quickly united in a warm and convivial atmosphere. Although the unseasonably poor weather prevented us from making use of the Terrace as planned, the room itself was soon filled with laughter, conversation, and the gentle backdrop of soft jazz music.

As always, one of the highlights of the evening was seeing alumni reconnect - many meeting again for the first time in years, or even decades. Conversations flowed easily as stories were exchanged and guests shared updates on their careers and life journeys since leaving Trinity. The presence of former teachers Dr Malcolm Dodd, Fraser MacDonald, David Lawson, Vic Tokarski and Ana Abad; current teachers David Price, David Lydon, Andrew Magee, Ian Marsh and Anthony Muirhead; and former Headmaster Mark Bishop proved, as ever, a particular highlight, with alumni delighted to catch up with those who had played such an important role in their school years.

The Headmaster, Al Kennedy addressed guests during the evening, reflecting on a number of important developments within the school. These included Jason Court’s forthcoming retirement as Director of Development, plans for the school’s transition to full co-education, student-led T60 fundraising initiatives, as well as updates on the music department’s associated challenges and a three-person staff team walking the entire tram route from Beckenham to Wimbledon.

While the occasion marked Jason’s final alumni event in his role, he was unfortunately unable to attend due to illness, rather like missing one’s own birthday celebration. He was greatly missed by all present and we look forward to welcoming him back at his milestone reunion event for his Class of 1986 on Saturday 4 July.

Our host, David Hodson, delivered an engaging and entertaining speech on the history of the National Liberal Club, much to the enjoyment of guests. His lively and informative presentation added an extra layer of depth to an already memorable evening.

The event formally concluded at 9.30pm, though many guests chose to continue their evening within the Club, retiring to the Smoking Room for drinks. With its quiet grandeur, tall windows and views over the Thames, it provided an elegant setting in which to round off the night.

We extend our sincere thanks to Michael, David, and his wife Bunty Matthias for hosting such a wonderful event in a truly historic venue. Their generosity is greatly appreciated, and we are grateful for their continued support of our alumni community.

Trinity Charity Golf Day 2026 ⛳ | A Winning Round for the Bursary Fund

Bogeys, birdies, eagles, pars — and even the elusive hole-in-one — made for another fantastic Trinity Charity Golf Day.

With warm weather and just a brief shower, golfers enjoyed a relaxed and sociable day on the course. As tradition dictates, Trinity governor and alumnus David Seymour and his team, “Last of the Summer Wine”, brought the day to a close as the final group finished.

From the first tee-off to the final putt, the day was full of camaraderie, good humour and friendly competition. One golfer captured it perfectly:

“For me, it was the best year so far… my group were just so nice and we had a great, relaxed round — maybe a bit too relaxed!”

We were especially pleased to welcome more female golfers this year, including Gina Thompson and Jo Johnson, and look forward to building on this in future.

A highlight on the course was the hole-in-one challenge on the 13th, with a £10,000 prize up for grabs. While no one claimed it, several came close, with Trevor Cooke taking the nearest-to-the-pin prize.

👏 Congratulations to Connor White (overall winner) and Nick Thompson (runner-up).

This event is made possible by the incredible work of our Development and Alumni Team, with special thanks to alumnus and Archivist Laurie King, who worked tirelessly to bring the day together — supported brilliantly on the day by the wider team and volunteers.

Laurie reflected on the day:
“What a wonderful time we all had at the Trinity School Charity Golf Day. This was our largest field yet, with a real cross-section of parents, alumni, staff and supporters — a true Trinity community coming together, having fun and raising vital funds for the Bursary.”
We are extremely grateful to all our sponsors who donated raffle and auction prizes.

Thanks to the generosity of our golfers:
✅ £3,600 raised through raffle and auction
✅ Over £5,000 raised in total for the Trinity Bursary Fund

The evening featured a powerful reminder of why we do this work. Former bursary students Nicholas and Daniel Thompson shared their journeys since leaving Trinity, speaking movingly about the opportunities bursary support made possible.

As Jason Court, Director of Development, reflected:
“They perfectly captured the welcoming, social spirit of Trinity — and why our community feels inspired to pay it forward.”

A huge thank you to everyone who played, supported and contributed — especially our 72 golfers who helped make this our best Golf Day yet.

📅 Save the date: Wednesday 26 May 2027

We look forward to welcoming both returning and new golfers — especially more ladies — for another memorable day.

TRAMLINE TREK: 25,000 STEPS FOR TRINITY BURSARIES

On Saturday 30 May, three of Trinity School Croydon’s teaching staff are taking on a brilliant (and slightly brave!) challenge in support of the Trinity Bursary Fund.

David Lydon (Teacher of English), Lucy Robinson (Director of Drama), and Wil Coma (Teacher of Art) will be walking the entire tram route from Beckenham to Wimbledon…

🚶‍♂️ 14 miles

🚋 27 stops

👣 Around 25,000 steps

This is the same route used by more than 17 million passengers each year - including many Trinity students - but we suspect very few have experienced it quite like this!

They’re stepping out to help ensure that more young people can benefit from a Trinity education through bursary support. It’s a fantastic team effort (and quite the test of endurance - those last miles won’t be easy!).

If you can, please show your support and help spur them on - every donation will make a real difference.

To mark Trinity’s 60th anniversary, the Music Department is taking on a one-of-a-kind fundraising journey—linking the places behind our revitalised House system and raising vital funds for the Trinity Bursary Fund, starting Saturday 23 May and finishing on Saturday 30 May.

The Challenge: From Castle to School

Our route is designed to connect the House story from start to finish:

• Pembroke – setting off from Pembroke Castle
• Worcester – travelling via coastline, hills and rivers to Worcester
• Cambridge – a special link in Whitgift’s story (Master of Pembroke and Trinity)
• Canterbury – to Canterbury, where Whitgift became Archbishop
• Trinity – finishing at Trinity School, ready to celebrate together

Along the way, the team will travel by foot, bike, canoe, punt, and more—a true multi-discipline test of stamina (and teamwork).

Why We’re Doing It
The Trinity Bursary Fund helps ensure that any talented student can access an education at Trinity which includes instrumental and singing tuition, regardless of financial circumstance. This challenge is about protecting access, widening opportunity, as well as keeping music thriving.

Every student benefits from a diverse learning environment.
