Sonny Rollins has long been an inspiration to me. His playing certainly brought me (and countless others) such joy. He is already sorely missed, but I can't help but be grateful for the wonderful musicianship that he graced us with. "Without a Song" is one of my favourite recordings of his. Thank you for everything, Mr Rollins.

In this video I introduce my etude "Start with the Tones!" taken from my eBook "Jazz Etudes for Saxophone, Vol. 1". The piece showcases just how important chord tones are when we improvise, but not only that - that we can say a huge amount with chord tones when we improvise! They're really not to be understimated.
This video is also meant to be a companion piece to the video lessons "First 12 Bar Blues" Parts 1 & 2 so check them out too!
Happy practising!
Best wishes,
Nathan

I've been working on a bit of a mammoth video lesson to try and help saxophonists improvise over the Blues. It ended up being over 40 mins long(!) so I split it in two. There's free downloadable pdfs of all the exercises and an mp3 of the backing track. I think it's quite fun, and I hope quite useful for anyone looking to work on their improv, so here's part 1! Happy practising! The world needs more sax players!
