🎓 Celebrating the Class of 2026 Wheeler Programme Graduates!

This week, we were delighted to celebrate the graduation of our Class of 2026 Wheeler Programme students following five years of commitment, growth and personal development. Since joining the programme in Year 9, these young people have embraced opportunities to broaden their horizons through mentoring, leadership development, university visits, residential experiences, academic lessons, workshops and inspirational encounters designed to raise aspirations and build confidence. The Wheeler Programme supports selected state school students from partner schools, helping them develop the skills, networks and self-belief to thrive in their future ambitions. At their graduation ceremony, students reflected on their journeys and the impact the programme has had on their academic, personal and professional aspirations. We are incredibly proud of everything they have achieved and look forward to seeing where their next chapter takes them. https://wcla.wellingtoncollege.org.uk/class-of-2026-students-graduate-from-wheeler-programme/

Well done to all our Wheeler Year 9 and 10s who survived a very hot week at Wellington on their residential

Could you build a raft from just rope and an oil drum? Or solve a series of puzzles to open a padlocked box? These were just two of the activities tackled by students on a Wheeler Programme residential last week.

🚀 Supporting our lab technicians to deliver superb science practicals!

Next week, Wellington College will host workshops for 19 physics lab technicians from 11 schools across our Teaching Alliance.
Participants will develop hands-on expertise in key A-level topics including:
🔬 Quantum physics
🌊 Waves
⚡ Electric and magnetic fields
🔋 Circuits, capacitors & internal resistance

Led by our technician Wendy Vooght, the sessions build on the success of last year’s workshops and reflect our ongoing commitment to collaboration, professional development, and improving student outcomes in science.
At WCLA, we’re proud to create opportunities that empower staff and enrich learning across our network.

We’re delighted to share feedback from our partner schools highlighting the value of the Wellington College Student Alliance (WCSA).
A recent survey shows:
✅ Schools strongly value their involvement in WCSA
✅ Students benefit from a wide range of opportunities – from outdoor education and enterprise to university access
✅ The Wheeler Programme continues to make a lasting difference, offering long-term mentoring and residential experience

The vast majority of schools also said the annual membership fee is more than recouped through participation in WCSA activities.

How to manage money after school was one of the topics up for discussion at a Year 12 Wheeler Day last week. Students heard from Mike Flack from financial education charity Wize Up, who talked about student finances, budgeting after they leave school and how to invest. They also learned about American rock climber Alex Honnold ‘free soloing’ El Capitan in Yosemite National Park and how his experiences can be adapted to academic success. They also enjoyed a session leadership from Wellington College teacher Emmie Bidston, where they talked about what makes a good leader in life, reflecting on their experiences of both good and bad leadership and the difference it makes.

What saves more energy? Swapping your daily car commute for an electric train? Car pooling for the school run? Turning down your thermostat by one degree centigrade? These were among the questions that students from eight WCSA schools had to answer when they took part in an eco quiz organised by students on the Wellington College Student Sustainability Council. Ten students from each of Garth Hill, Easthampstead Park, Charters, Edgbarrow, Ranelagh, Bohunt, The Holt and Waingels schools all took part in the online quiz, choosing from topics including travel, energy and food.

Do you know the size of the Milky Way? That’s what students on the Wheeler Programme were asked when they visited Wellington College this week. The Year 9 class enjoyed a talk from Lakshya Sethi of the Space Store in Oxford, who told them the answer – more than 100,000 light years across – and also allowed Wheeler student Thomas to try on a replica of a real space suit.
