So this happened today, our first Graduation leavers BBQ since the move to East Sussex, the little people that started with me 4 years ago are ready for their next chapter, off to school. We have had an amazing 4 years together and a fantastic last day as pre schoolers , they partied well. I couldn’t be more proud of them , their unique personalities, their kindness, their resilience and how they have grown into such amazing little humans. Feeling proud 💚

Your toddler does not need friends before age 3. What they need is you, calm, consistent, and close. Peer socialization is not a developmental requirement for young toddlers. Secure attachment is.

A young child's brain is wired for one on one connection with a primary caregiver. Friendships before age 3 are mostly parallel play, not true social interaction. Toddlers do not learn sharing or empathy from peers. They learn those skills from watching a regulated adult model them.

The pressure to socialize toddlers early is cultural, not biological. What their brain actually needs is predictable care, emotional safety, and a calm adult to co-regulate with. Friends come later. First comes security.

So skip the guilt about missed playdates. Your presence matters more than any peer.

Do not make a happy baby happier. There is a cost. Over entertained babies struggle to play without noise, toys, songs, or screens. Stillness makes them angry. Here is why stealing their calm trains their brain to crave chaos.

A baby's brain needs quiet moments to process, imagine, and self regulate. When every pause is filled with a song, a rattle, or a screen, their brain learns that silence is uncomfortable. They stop generating their own ideas. They start needing external stimulation just to feel okay.

The fix is simple. Do less. Put the toy down. Turn off the music. Let them stare at the ceiling. Within minutes, most babies will find something to explore. Their own hands. A shadow. The way light moves. That is brain building.

Calm is not boring. Calm is where creativity grows.

A great read

You set a new rule. No tablet before homework. No crackers 30 minutes before dinner.

Then the explosion happens. Worse than before. Louder. Longer. You think, ""This is not working. I should give up.""

Do not give up.

Behavioral science calls this the extinction burst. When a previously rewarded behavior stops working, the brain does not accept defeat quietly. It tries harder. Longer. More dramatically. The child who whined for five minutes now screams for twenty. The toddler who accepted ""no"" now throws a plate.

That is not regression. That is the brain's final desperate attempt to get what it used to get.

Here is what happens next. If you hold the line, the behavior will peak and then collapse. Usually within three to seven days. The child's brain learns the new reality: that strategy no longer works. A new pattern replaces the old one.

If you give in during the burst, you do something worse than failing. You teach the child that screaming longer works. Next time, the extinction burst will be louder and longer because the brain remembers: persistence pays.

Expect the burst. Plan for it. Breathe through it. It gets worse so it can get better. That is neuroscience, not bad parenting.

Why do children sometimes bite others, what can parents do to manage the behaviour, and when should they get further help? By Annette Rawstrone

There is a quiet pressure to believe that if we don't "harden" our children, the world will break them. It is a fundamental misunderstanding of how human resilience is actually built.

Being hard on a child doesn't teach them strength; it teaches them how to build walls. It teaches them that their vulnerability is a liability and that they are only safe when they are performing or complying.

Real strength is built on a foundation of security. When a child knows they are understood and supported — even in their failure — they develop the internal courage to take risks and face the world.

Compassion isn't a "soft" approach; it is the most effective one. It allows a child to stay connected to their own nervous system instead of living in a constant state of defense. If you want to raise a child who can handle the weight of the world, don't focus on making them "tough." Focus on making them secure.

A child who is anchored in understanding will always be stronger than a child who is just trying to survive. 💚
