Little glimpse into one of our regular pre-session jobs at HYH… poo picking 💩🐴

The video isn’t the best 🙈 but it actually shows something really special. Horses are incredibly sensitive to emotions, energy and behaviour, especially in children.

Before sessions, poo picking helps Sadhbh regulate, settle into the environment and feel grounded without any pressure. You’ll notice Rio and Oskar quietly keeping the other ponies away from her space while she does what she needs to do. No one taught them that… they just pick up on the slight nervousness and respond in their own gentle way.

Sometimes the smallest moments around the yard say the most 💛

✔️ Unofficial yard manager

…but also…

✔️ The one who stands quietly when a child can’t find the words
✔️ The one who doesn’t judge, rush, or expect anything back

Funny how the cheekiest ones…
are often the ones doing the most healing 💛

🐴 “Why is Oskar standing like this?”

At the end of her session, Sadhbh likes to do a bit of poo picking in the turnout pen — it’s her way of regulating and winding down.

All the horses were turned out together, with the freedom to come over or stay away… and Oskar chose to come over.
Head low, ears forward, standing close (but not too close) and tuned into what Sadhbh was doing…

👉 This is a horse that is relaxed, curious and engaged.
A low head shows he feels safe and settled.

Ears forward means he’s interested and paying attention.
That bit of space? Respect — he’s not overwhelming her.
He’s not guarding — he’s choosing to be there.

👉 Calm horse + calm child = connection 💛
