🧠 Word of the Week: Sum

This week’s word is sum – a word children will hear throughout primary school when working with addition.
The sum is the total we get when we add two or more numbers together. ➕

It’s also a word that is often used incorrectly! In maths, sum specifically refers to addition – it doesn’t just mean a calculation. So, technically, a subtraction or multiplication calculation isn’t a “sum”! 🤯

Understanding mathematical vocabulary like this is really important, particularly when children begin to tackle word problems and reasoning questions where they need to work out exactly what they are being asked to do.

🎉 Guess the Counters Competition Results! 🎉

A huge thank you to everyone who entered my Guess the Counters competition at either the Rimrose Valley event or the Fairies & Elves Fair.

There were 161 counters in the jar, and the closest guess was 165 — just 4 away!

The winner has now been contacted privately to arrange their prize.

Unfortunately, I’m currently having a few technical difficulties with my emails, so I’m struggling to contact everyone individually at the moment. I wanted to share the result here in the meantime so nobody is left wondering!

Back to school maths ✏️📚

With September just around the corner, you might be wondering whether you should be doing some maths with your child before they head back to school.

But getting ready for September doesn’t need to mean worksheets, revision or trying to get ahead with next year’s maths!

Instead, focus on building confidence, revisiting skills they already know, playing games and finding opportunities to talk about maths in everyday life. 🩷🩵

Every child will start the new school year in a different place, and that’s okay! The most important thing is that they feel ready to have a go, make mistakes, ask questions and keep learning. 😊

As you can see, my 1:1 sessions are already filling up for September!

If you're looking for a 1:1 session but can't see a suitable time available, please get in touch. I may be able to move some of my group sessions around depending on demand, so there is a little flexibility in the timetable.

A little reminder that my session prices will be changing from 1st September. Sessions booked before 31st August will still be charged at my current prices, so you can book ahead now if you'd like to take advantage of these before the change. 🩷

From September, sessions will be:
1:1 – £32
Group – £21

Discounted 6-session passes will still be available too — swipe across for all the information. 👉

September sessions begin from Monday 7th September.

Word of the Week: Place Value 🔢✨

Maths has lots of important vocabulary, and place value is one of the key concepts that underpins so much of the maths children learn throughout primary school.

Place value tells us the value of a digit depending on its position in a number. The place tells us where the digit is, while the value tells us how much it is worth.

As children head back to school, place value is particularly important as it is often one of the first areas of maths revisited at the beginning of the new school year. Children build on their previous understanding as they move through the year groups, working with increasingly larger numbers and developing a deeper understanding of the value of each digit.

Having a secure understanding of place value supports so many other areas of maths, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, rounding and much more.

💡 I've also added a challenge on the final slide — can you use the clues to work out the 4-digit number?

⭐ Bonus point: Can you rearrange the same four digits to make a number as close as possible to 5,000?

The summer holidays are flying by! ☀️🩷

After a few weeks away from school, it’s completely normal for some of those maths skills and number facts to feel a little rusty.

But there’s no need to suddenly bring out the worksheets!

Just 5–10 minutes here and there can help to get their maths brain ticking again 🧠✨

🎲 Play a quick game with cards or dice
🕐 Talk about time while you’re out and about
💷 Look at prices and money when you’re shopping
🧁 Get them measuring and weighing in the kitchen
🔢 Look for numbers, shapes and maths in the world around you

The aim isn’t to teach anything new or spend the last few weeks of the holidays “catching up” — it’s simply about bringing familiar skills back to the surface and helping children head back to school feeling confident. 🩵🩷

And the best bit? It doesn’t have to feel like maths practice at all!

Even when I'm relaxing on a Friday night with my family, apparently I'm still making sure I'm on brand! 😂🩷🩵

Had such a lovely evening at the Berries and Bakes Sip & Swirl event at Angela Welsby ~ Baby & Toddler classes ~ Lullababy Sefton on Friday night. Obviously my cake ended up Jenny Jones Tuition pink and blue! 🎂

I even somehow managed to wear a pink and blue jumpsuit to match! 🙈🤣

Apparently there is no escaping the Jenny Jones Tuition colour scheme now! 😂🩷🩵

We are SO excited to finally announce that Bootle Community Hub will be opening its doors this September! 🥳💜

And we couldn’t think of a better way to start our announcements than with something we know our community has been asking for…

💃🕺 SEND CHILDREN’S DANCE CLASSES! 🕺💃

We will be offering inclusive dance classes for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), creating a fun, welcoming and supportive space where everyone can MOVE YOUR WAY! 🌈✨

📅 Every Monday
👧 Ages 3–8: 4:30pm–5:15pm
🧒 Ages 9–16: 5:30pm–6:15pm
💷 £5 per class
📅 Starting Monday 7th September

Spaces will be LIMITED, so don’t miss out! ❤️
