The Rorke’s Drift Concert 2024

In just a few weeks time, the Band and Drums of Gwent & Powys ACF will take to the stage as part of the Massed Bands and Drums of the ACF to promote a musical spectacular like no other. With performances from the infamous Pipes and Drums of Black Watch Battalion ACF and a special guest appearance by Brecon Male Voice Choir, this is an event not to be missed!

Compèred by Adrian Beckett MBE with his unique comedic style, and with WO2 Rundle-Wood of The Band and Drums of the Royal Gibraltar Regiment as the Concert Director of Music, there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Today we celebrate International Tuba Day! Cadet Colour Sergeant Madison Chaplin is our resident tuba player, and is joined on occasion by different members of the band. Madison switched from trombone to tuba during covid and hasn’t looked back since!

Interestingly, the ancestor of the tuba was called ‘the serpent’ due to its very unique look, and in some American style marching bands they play a variation on the tuba called a sousaphone!

If you fancy learning to play the tuba alongside Madison, why not get in touch? Instruments and lessons are provided free of charge, and maybe you might find yourself on the front rank of tubas leading a parade one day!

Happy Birthday!

Today we celebrate the birthday of Cadet Corporal Kaitlyn Bowyer, who has been a member of The Band and Corps of Drums for several years. It’s always a bittersweet day, as we are celebrating, but also saying goodbye, as members move on to the next step in their lives, hopefully taking with them some of the important lessons they have learned, the confidence to move forwards but also a whole host of memories!

During her time with us, Kaitlyn has always attended the Corps of Drums regularly, thoroughly enjoyed camps and has also experienced a wide range of parades, gigs, concerts and events not just within G&P, but across the UK.

Kaitlyn’s Detachment Commander, 2Lt Abigail Foskett, told us:

“Kaitlyn is an experienced member of our team at Raglan Corps of Drums and since returning from lockdown she has become very valuable in teaching our newer cadets both their basic green and music skills. Kaitlyn can be relied upon to deliver lessons to a high standard every time which demonstrates the skills and confidence she has gained whilst being part of the ACF.
Kaitlyn has shown real passion and determination to develop her own skills and should be proud of the young person she has become. It has been a pleasure to have her at detachment, and she will be missed by us all in the Band and Drums!”

We would like to wish Kaitlyn every success with her future endeavours and know that she has the potential to succeed in whatever she chooses to do.

Well, we should now be sat in Theatr Brycheiniog completing the final rehearsals for The Rorke's Drift Concert, but sadly, in the current situation it’s not meant to be!

Christmas Wishes

We may not be able to meet face-to-face, but music will always bring us together! This is our very first ‘virtual band’ saved especially for Christmas! It premiered at the Derbyshire Annual Christmas Concert last weekend (on zoom this year of course) and we have held out until Christmas Eve to share it with you.

So, grab your golden ticket and jump aboard the Polar Express with us on a magical journey to the North Pole. It’s going to be an amazing ride, but make sure you listen carefully, for we all know that the bells only ring for those that truly believe!

Music Camp - The Memories!

So usually the Band and Drums would be spending their half term week at Longmoor Training Camp in Hampshire with cadets from across the UK, taking part in a week packed to the rafters with music, friendship, and lots of excitement. Current restrictions mean that we can’t be together face to face, and although we are taking part Virtual Camps this week, we look forward to the time that we can be back together and experience the great fun that makes a week at National Band Camp.

Music is just one of the pathways through the Army Cadet Force APC Syllabus, and can be taken alongside or as an alternative to the traditional green subjects. With virtual training offered weekly on a range of instruments from beginner to advanced, it’s still a great time to get involved. To find out more, why not get in touch?

The Staff Cadet Diaries

Today we celebrate the 18th birthday of Sergeant Kath Braby, and welcome her into to fold of Staff Cadets. Kath is one of our cadets who travels a fair distance to parade at Gwent & Powys, as her love for Military music meant seeking out a county that offered her those additional opportunities. This means that she can continue to follow both the green syllabus and the military band syllabus. Kath excels in both areas - recent restrictions have temporarily stopped her from completing her 3* green, but she is already working steadily through the 4* Military band syllabus.

Kath is very keen to do well and puts her heart and soul into whatever she is doing. She has attended lessons regularly throughout the ‘Virtual Sessions’ and is always offering to do extra. As well as being a flautist and piccolo player, she is an accomplished contemporary musician and skilled singer. On her very first National Music Camp she won the Tex Factor Competition with her ‘partner in crime’ Cpl Rule-Stone, singing and playing guitar, and continues to build on this. Earlier in the year, she recorded a beautiful rendition of ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ for the NHS, and recently she was invited to take part in the ‘Army On The Fringe’ Virtual Celebration, where she was given the opportunity to do a singing masterclass with renowned soprano Laura Wright. Despite being told only a few moments before that it was being streamed live, she performed amazingly and learnt so many new techniques to support her singing development.

Kath has been a fantastic addition to The Band and Drums and is a driving force behind the development of their own contemporary band. She has a clear vision of what she wants to achieve and is bringing the younger cadets on that journey with her. We have seen her grow into a confident and determined young lady who is keen to support and develop those around her. We have no doubt that she will go far, and look forward to seeing where this new role will take her!
