NEU Cymru – llongyfarchiadau ar ganlyniadau cymwysterau

Wrth siarad am ganlyniadau cymwysterau heddiw, dywedodd Daniel Maney, Uwch Drefnydd Cymru ar gyfer Undeb Addysg Cenedlaethol Cymru:

“Llongyfarchiadau i bob myfyriwr sy'n derbyn eu canlyniadau TGAU, Bagloriaeth Cymru a chymwysterau Lefel 2 eraill heddiw. Mae eu penderfyniad, eu gwydnwch a'u gwaith caled, ochr yn ochr ag ymdrechion addysgwyr, rhieni a gofalwyr sy'n eu cefnogi, yn haeddu clod mawr.

“Fodd bynnag, mae'r diwrnod hwn yn dod â risg anghymesur a phryder diangen i lawer o fyfyrwyr. Mae gormod o fyfyrwyr yn ceisio llwyddo er gwaethaf yr holl heriau y maent yn eu hwynebu ar hyn o bryd oherwydd diffyg cyllid yn y system addysg yng Nghymru ac anallu i gael mynediad at y gefnogaeth anghenion dysgu ychwanegol sydd ei hangen arnynt.

"Er bod lefelau cofrestru ymgeiswyr eleni wedi'u heffeithio gan y symudiad parhaus tuag at gymwysterau ar gyfer Cymru a bod y canlyniadau ar draws y cwricwlwm cyfan yn gymharol sefydlog o'r llynedd, mae'n wirioneddol ddi-fudd cymharu canlyniadau o un flwyddyn i'r llall. Mae arholiadau ar ddiwedd cwrs ymhell o fod y ffordd orau a thecaf o asesu sgiliau myfyrwyr. Mae rhai cymwysterau a ddyfernir heddiw yn defnyddio cymysgedd o ddulliau asesu ond nid ydynt yn llai cadarn.

“Wrth i fis Medi agosáu a'r symudiad tuag at gymwysterau ar gyfer Cymru yn 2027 yn parhau, mae angen i ni sicrhau bod y cymwysterau newydd hyn yn defnyddio ystod o ddulliau asesu, sy’n dal yr hyn y gall pobl ifanc ei wneud. Dylid mesur sgiliau neu wybodaeth gael ei deilwra i anghenion y pwnc, nid aros gydag asesu trwy arholiad yn unig. Byddai dulliau asesu cymysg, ehangach yn helpu i feithrin sgiliau’n fwy effeithiol a rhoi cyfle i bob myfyriwr ddangos yr hyn y gallant ei wneud. Mae angen i ni hefyd sicrhau nad ydym yn cynyddu baich gwaith athrawon, ond yn ymddiried yn eu barn, heb ychwanegu gormod o fiwrocratiaeth ddiangen arnynt.

“I'r rhai sydd wedi sicrhau'r graddau oedd eu hangen arnynt i fynd ymlaen i Addysg Bellach, rydym yn eu llongyfarch ac yn dymuno'n dda iddynt. Mae hefyd yn bwysig cofio heddiw, i'r bobl ifanc hynny nad ydynt wedi cael y canlyniadau maen nhw eu hangen, nad dyma ddiwedd y ffordd. Gallant siarad â'u hysgol a'u coleg lleol am yr opsiynau sydd ar gael - mae yna lawer o gyrsiau ar gaell.”

Press Release: 20 August 2026

NEU Cymru – congratulations on qualification results

Speaking about the qualification results today, Daniel Maney, Senior Wales Organiser for the National Education Union Cymru, said:

“Congratulations to all students receiving their GCSE, Welsh Baccalaureate and other Level 2 qualification results today. Their determination, resilience and hard work, alongside the efforts of educators, parents and carers who support them, deserve great credit.

“This day however comes with disproportionate high stakes and unnecessary anxiety for many students. Too many students are trying to succeed despite all the challenges they currently face due to the underfunding of the education system in Wales and an inability to access the additional learning needs support they require.

"Whilst this year’s candidate entry levels are effected by the ongoing move to made for Wales qualifications and the results across the whole curriculum are broadly stable from last year, it is really unhelpful to compare results from one year to the next. End of course exams are far from the best and fairest way to assess students' skills. Some qualifications awarded today use a mixture of assessment methods but are no less robust.

“As September approaches and the move towards made for Wales qualifications in 2027 continues, we need to ensure that these new qualifications use a range of assessment methods, which capture what young people can do. The measurement of skills or knowledge should be tailored to the needs of a subject, not the one-size-fits-all of exams. Broader, mixed methods of assessment would help cultivate skills more effectively and allow all students the chance to show what they can do. We also need to ensure that we don't increase the workload of teachers, but trust their judgement, without adding too much unnecessary bureaucracy.

“For those who have secured the grades they needed to go on to Further Education, we congratulate them and wish them well. It’s also important to remember today that for those young people who don’t get the results they want it isn’t the end of the road. They can speak to their school and local college about the options that are available – there are lots of courses out there.”
