I’ve signed up for the Plank Every Day Challenge this October! 💪💗

Every day throughout October, I’ll be getting down on the floor and holding that plank, all to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Cancer is something that has touched my own life, but it’s also something I see reflected in the lives of so many people around me. Over the years, many of my clients have been through cancer themselves, are currently going through treatment, or have supported someone they love through it.

So this challenge feels particularly meaningful to me.

31 days. A plank every day. And hopefully a few stronger muscles by the end of it too! 😅

If you’d like to support me, whether by donating, sharing my fundraising page, or simply cheering me on when I’m wondering why on earth I signed up for this, I’d be incredibly grateful. 💕

Every little bit helps support Cancer Research UK and the work they do towards beating cancer.

Day 1 starts tomorrow… wish me luck! 💪

🤔 Do you ever find yourself asking your client question after question during their treatment?

“Is the pressure OK?”
“Would you like me to spend longer here?”
“Shall I work on your shoulders now?”
“Would you like a bit more pressure?”

Of course we need to check in with our clients, and listening to them is hugely important.

But sometimes I think we can ask too much.

Think about going to see a physio or chiropractor. We explain why we’re there, answer their questions and talk about what we hope to get from the appointment. But once the treatment begins, we don’t usually feel we need to tell them what technique to use next or where they should work.

We trust that they know their job.

Why should it feel any different when someone comes to us?

A good consultation is our opportunity to listen, understand what our client wants from their treatment and agree what we’re going to do.

Then they can get on the couch, relax and let us use the skills we’ve trained in.

That doesn’t mean we stop checking in when it’s appropriate, or ignore what our client is telling us. It means having confidence in our own skills rather than asking them to direct every part of their treatment.

Sometimes being looked after means being able to switch off and not have to make any decisions for an hour. 💚

🌿 Puk’s Therapist Tip 🌿
Let your client lead the conversation.

When you’re a new therapist, it can sometimes feel awkward when a client goes quiet. You might find yourself asking questions or starting a conversation simply because you feel you awkward in silence.

But silence during a treatment is absolutely OK.

Some clients will chat throughout their appointment, while others have been looking forward to an hour where nobody needs anything from them and they can simply switch off.

Take your lead from your client. If they want to talk, engage with them. If their answers become shorter, their eyes close or they become quiet, let them enjoy that space.

You don’t need to entertain your client. Your job is to make them feel comfortable, cared for and able to relax.

Learning to read your client is a skill in itself, and it’s one that grows with every treatment you give. 💚

Sometimes becoming a better therapist isn’t about learning what else to do. It’s learning when to do less.

💚 What could ONE DAY add to your therapist toolkit? 💚

As therapists, I think we are naturally curious. We want to keep learning, develop our skills and discover different ways of helping the people who come through our doors.

But learning something new doesn’t always have to mean committing to a long course or completely changing the way you already work.

Sometimes one day can simply open the door to a different way of thinking.

My one-day EMMETT Workshop is an opportunity to experience a gentle and precise approach to bodywork, learn a selection of EMMETT moves and, most importantly, have plenty of time to practise them.

My workshops are kept small because I want everyone to be able to ask questions, receive individual guidance and leave feeling confident about what they’ve learnt.

You don’t need to replace the skills you already have.
You’re simply adding another tool to your therapist toolkit.
And you never know when that tool might be exactly the one you need. 💚

🌿 Puk’s Therapist Tip #5

You don’t have to fix everything in one treatment.

Because we care so much about what we do, it can be very easy to put pressure on ourselves to make a huge difference every time someone gets on the couch.

But most of the time, just listening to the client, what they need that day and working with our kind intention can help the body free itself to a better and more comfortable state than when the client arrived.

✨ Maybe they move a little more freely
✨ Maybe their discomfort has eased
✨ Maybe they simply feel relaxed for the first time all week

👌 Those are all very positive outcomes.

And sometimes the body needs time.

So don’t put yourself under pressure to perform miracles.
Listen. Treat what you find. And remember that sometimes a small change can make a big difference. 💚
