I said hundreds of clients in the video, but when I was adding captions, I realised that it is actually more like thousands 😱
With my past clients performing stages like the O2, big summer festivals, international tours, coaching world leaders, lecturing in academia, releasing songs, EP's, working with some of the best producers in the industry, sharing their giant stories on giant stages, finding an authentic vocal sound that feels 'right' for every day life or simply singing their grandchildren to sleep - I have learned that performance pressure can affect us at any level.
And I mean AT ANY LEVEL!
I know, cause I have seen it over and over again in my studio with singers and speakers of all levels. Typical reasons include:
🤍 being told in school that you can't sing or should be quiet
🤍 being picked-on for a voice that doesn't correlate to your gender and trying to hold the voice "in place"
🤍 being laughed at for reading or singing aloud
🤍 worrying what other people will think
🤍 having a vocal difficulty or health issue that causes a lack of trust in the voice
🤍 messing up a performance and being unable to process the feelings of disappointment
🤍 worrying that you're going to mess up a performance, so just avoiding it completely
About 9 years ago my own performance nerves got to me so badly (let's chalk that up to a couple of crappy performances and some MTD on top of my existing history of anxiety) that I completely stopped singing 🫣🫣🫣 ALTOGETHER.
Zero performing.
I mean - I'm a blimmin' voice coach for goodness sake!
Anyway, I felt so certain I'd mess up, embarrass myself and then I'd never get a client again, I just avoided it completely 😶🌫️
Turns out that avoidance isn't nearly as fun or easy as I hoped it would be and turns out I needed to both sing and speak. Like really. Singing makes me happy, and I know it makes my clients happy too. Not to mention that singing, lecturing, teaching and presenting makes me money. And probably if you've read this far, your voice makes you money too! So learning to manage performance anxiety is really a vital skill for surviving life!
