October is Domestic Abuse Awareness Month…
An estimated 3.8 million people aged 16 and over experienced domestic abuse in England and Wales in the year ending March 2025.
My story is one of those statistics and the reason the programme Bold, Brave & Beautiful exists.
I have experienced abuse at many points during my lifetime, thankfully I broke the cycle in 2018. Since then finding my way back to myself has meant much more than leaving a relationship. It has meant looking at what I believed about myself, what I accepted, where my boundaries were and learning to trust my own voice enough to really listen to it.
None of that made the abuse my fault. The responsibility belongs to the person who chose to abuse. My resposibility was enagaging with the work of rebuilding.
For a long time, I’ve shared parts of my story in the third person. There have been reasons for that, including protecting people I love and feeling afraid of what speaking openly might bring. Recently, I’ve been thinking about telling it in the first person.
After all is it is my story, my voice and somewhere along that journey, I made a pledge to myself: to learn to love myself unconditionally.
I’m still learning what that means in practice. Sometimes it means having an uncomfortable conversation. Sometimes it means holding a boundary. Sometimes it means letting myself be loved and supported, rather than feeling I have to carry everything.
**Bold, Brave and Beautiful grew from that journey.**
I created it to support individuals in reconnecting with themselves, questioning the beliefs that keep them small and making choices that honour who they are.
You don’t have to have experienced domestic abuse to recognise the feeling of losing yourself in other people’s needs and expectations.
You can be capable, intelligent and the person everyone turns to—and still need space to ask:
What do I need?
What do I want?
What am I ready to change?
