If you don't have enough practice hours to be readmitted to the register, your choices are outlined in our return to practice requirements. The Test of Competence is one of the choices. The other is a course on returning to practice.

The Test of Competence is made up of two parts:
01. a multiple-choice computer-based theoretical test known as the CBT
02. a practical test known as the OSCE

Each component of the registration for nursing, midwifery, and nursing associates has a different test. Each sector has a particular test for nursing.

In your NMC Online account, you can reserve a spot for the Test of Competence. You'll then receive an email from NMC with information on how to schedule your CBT and OSCE.

NMC will send you an email inviting you to submit your application for readmission once you've successfully completed both of the components of your Test of Competence. The next step is for you to demonstrate that you satisfy all of NMC other readmission conditions.

* Your result is valid for five years *
Up to five years pass after you pass the Test of Competence. This indicates that you have five years from the date of your test to join or be readmitted to the register using your test results.
