A HIGHLY-respected former Crediton Head Teacher celebrated his 90th birthday with his family around him at Kenwyn Nursing Home in Crediton, where he has lived for the past three years.

I thought Shelley people would want to know of the passing of this friend of Shelley School - Keith Harvey. He visited Shelley many times and was a truly lovely, Crediton man. His memories live on.

The SHELLEY School Initiative test to HITCH HIKE from CREDITON to LONDON.

Will anybody remember this?
Will anyone believe this?

This was organised by Mike Heslop (Art) & Ken Saunders (Maths) with parents permission.

The BOYS set off from Crediton in pairs. 4.30pm at Trafalgar Square was the rendezvous point and yes some of the boys turned up. Off they went to the football at White Hart Lane for the evening kick off SPURS V WOLVES, Chris Crowe played! Mike thinks it was 1963 or 1964. The balance of hitch hiking pupils met at 10.30pm. They all then duly slept overnight on the park benches, under the stars, in VICTORIA TOWER GARDENS behind Houses of Parliament.
They all set off at 6.00am hitch hiking in the morning back to Crediton, the next day. Mike & Ken were stuck for a lift but went via Bristol.
Mike recalls a lift in a JAVELIN with a female driver. Mike in the front with Ken in the back with a very large shaggy dog on his lap. And another lift with a lorry full of sheep's pelts!!

He thinks that KEN TEAGUE won the test. Who was his hitch hike partner?

Can anyone remember being part of this test?

What a great school it was. You would never get away with it today. NO mobile phones. NO Gps. NO motorways!!!
