Back by popular demand, Herons enjoyed creating some self-portrait art last week for our new display. The children had a photo of half of their face as a reference and then used watercolours and fine line pens to compete their artwork. The best bit was taking down last year's work and seeing how much we've progressed in a year as we compared self-portraits. Superb work Herons!

Kingfishers have started their new Science unit on rocks and soils by comparing and grouping examples from a range of different locations. We explored base level comparisons of appearance before delving deeper into how different rocks could be used. I'm just glad we all agreed a house made of chalk bricks wouldn't be a great idea being so brittle!

We hope all of our families have had a wonderful summer break! ☀️

We are really looking forward to welcoming everyone back to St Thomas of Canterbury on Monday 7th September and hearing all about your summer adventures.

A particularly big welcome to all of the children and families joining us for the first time, both in school and in The Nest. 🪺❤️ We can’t wait for you to become part of our St Thomas family.

The classrooms are ready, the staff are excited and we’re looking forward to another busy, happy and exciting year together!

Herons had a marvellous time exploring our local river to round up our work in Science on habitats and 'Rivers and Coasts' in Geography. We began by understanding the different aspects of the river from the deeper areas where the under current has eroded the river bed to the shallower 'riffles' where the water is oxygenated for the local wildlife. We then enjoyed some bug hunting and classification of invertebrates by identifying different creatures from the river based on their characteristics! Finally, we went out looking for evidence of beavers which have returned to the river in the last 5 years. We found teeth marks and felled trees which shows the beavers are thriving and making a positive impact on the environment here! Lots of hands on learning through out the workshops and we can't thank the River's Trust and Taw Fishing Club enough for having us back.
