Introduction to Botanical Cyanotype

Achieve a comprehensive foundation in the Cyanotype process creating botanical photograms on watercolour paper. You will learn and practice the principles of 'sun printing' by coating the photosensitive solution onto paper, creating botanical compositions to expose and washing/drying prints.

It's an engaging, hands-on class designed to develop your skills and confidence to create your own unique Cyanotype prints at home.

Indigo is the classic blue dye of the sophisticated ‘tie-dyeing’ process of Japanese Shibori. You will learn something of the history and traditions of this magical process so that you can create two traditional intricate Shibori patterns on cotton fabric – which can be used for patchwork and other sewing projects. In addition you will have the opportunity to explore other techniques to create many sheets of indigo patterned tissue paper which can be used for wrapping, book covering etc..

Monoprint with Chine Collage

Spend a day experimenting with monoprint and collage (Chine Collé) techniques. You will use a method called direct trace drawing to produce a linear monotype that has a unique soft edged quality similar to the tone and line in soft ground etching.

To create your prints you will use torn paper to make a simple collage, then rolling out printmaking ink, before drawing on the back of the collage to transfer a monoprint drawing on top of it. Take your work further by working on top of the image with media of your choice, watercolour, inks, watercolour pastels and more. Bring along your own ideas or take inspiration from your tutor and the materials to hand.

Learn to make a straight-sided silver band to a size of your choice and a separate ‘spinner’ in brass or copper. Bring the two together using a magical technique that makes the inner ring unfurl and flute to capture the spinner, whilst still allowing it to twirl. The completed ring will be ready for you to wear or give as a gift by the end of the day.

Explore, step by step, the process of how to fuse finely powdered enamel onto a copper surface, whilst experimenting with a range of simple decorative medias such as millefiori, glass threads and stencils. You will learn how to fire your pieces in an electric kiln.

You will be able to create several items on the day e.g. a pendant, earrings, fridge magnets or a small picture to take away with you. Extra copper blanks will be available to purchase from the tutor on the day should you find you are on a roll!

In this hands-on workshop you will be introduced to one of the most versatile and satisfying jewellery-making techniques-creating a silver bezel to securely set a cabochon stone. Guided step by step, you will learn the skills needed to make a professional-looking piece that showcases your chosen stone.

We run level 2 and level 3 courses in Basketry here at Westhope. They are both 2 days of teaching a month and you can stay here in one of our lovely bedrooms!
