🎉 Did you know an Old Cranbrookian has been awarded £1.2 million to investigate how marine wildlife helps store carbon in the deep ocean? 🌊
Dr Danny Buss (Class of 2010, Webster) is a marine predator ecologist who has received a prestigious UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellowship for BlueFlux, her new research project at Oxford Brookes University.
Working with researchers from the British Antarctic Survey and Lancaster Environment Centre, among others, Danny will investigate how the diets of whales, Antarctic seabirds and fish influence the amount of carbon sinking into the deep ocean, where it can be stored for long periods. Her findings could improve our understanding of marine wildlife’s contribution to ocean carbon storage and help identify species that are particularly important to protect as the climate changes.
Danny’s fascination with marine ecosystems has shaped a remarkable research career. Her PhD at the University of Cambridge, undertaken in collaboration with the British Antarctic Survey, reconstructed the ecology and movements of baleen whales before commercial whaling. She has since studied species ranging from whales and walruses to seabirds and fish, using archaeological remains and museum specimens to understand how ocean wildlife has changed over centuries.
Her work has also taken her to South Georgia to study whales and to Antarctica, where she has contributed to the Penguin Watch project.
Danny’s journey reflects Cranbrook’s values of curiosity, aspiration and integrity, showing how looking into the past can help us protect the natural world for the future.
