📚 GCSE November Mocks are coming… is it time to get some focused revision in?

For many Year 11 students, these November mocks are the first time they will be facing a full set of four MFL papers.

Year 10 assessments are often based on just two skills, so moving to a complete mock can feel like a significant step up.

Unlike many other GCSE subjects, MFL students are assessed across four separate skills:

🗣️ Speaking
👂 Listening
📖 Reading
✍️ Writing

That’s a lot to prepare for — but you don’t necessarily need to spend your revision time on everything.

SEN Wednesday 💙 | Behind the avoidance

I’ve just attended a really interesting webinar from Witherslack Group: Behind the Avoidance: What is PDA?

I attended for both personal and professional reasons, and although I encounter PDA regularly, it was fascinating to explore more of the psychology behind demand avoidance, anxiety and engagement. The webinar looked at the physical, emotional and cognitive impact of PDA, as well as practical strategies to reduce anxiety and support positive participation. (⁠Witherslack Group)

It also got me thinking about how this understanding translates into my work as a language tutor.

With PDA learners, I can look beyond the immediate demands of a lesson or an exam and help them develop an awareness of the wider purposes and possibilities of language learning.

What could French or German allow you to do?

Where could it take you?

What interests you?

I can also create a bespoke programme of learning that incorporates the learner’s own ideas, interests and priorities, rather than expecting them simply to follow a predetermined path.

And that flexibility continues within the session itself.

If I have carefully planned an activity but can see that it isn’t working for that learner on that particular day, I’m very happy to put my plan aside and respond to what they need.

In fact, I did exactly this with a learner yesterday. After a particularly hard day of mock exams, they asked if we could do something different from what I had planned.

So we changed direction. And we still learned.

That isn’t watering down the learning. It’s strengthening it by delivering it in a way that works for the individual learner.

For me, inclusive teaching isn’t about lowering expectations. It’s about understanding what might be getting in the way of engagement — and being responsive enough to find another route in.

Sometimes the most effective lesson is the one you didn’t plan. 💙

🌍 CAREER OF THE WEEK: JOURNALISM & MEDIA 🎥

“Languages are a huge gift to give any child, as they open a whole different window on the world.”

I absolutely love this quote from BBC journalist Caroline Wyatt.

And her own career is a brilliant example of exactly what she means.

Caroline studied German at school and university before joining the BBC. Her language skills helped her begin her career as a foreign correspondent in Berlin, and she later became BBC Paris correspondent, where functional French was essential.

She used French and German regularly while working in Europe — for interviews, reading newspapers and books, watching TV and, importantly, understanding the cultures and perspectives of the people she was reporting on. (⁠The Guardian)

She even says:

“I couldn’t have done that job without the language.” (⁠The Guardian)

This is exactly why I want to show young people that learning a language isn’t simply about becoming a translator or a teacher.

Your French or German could become the extra skill that opens the door to an entirely different career.

The BBC defence correspondent's language skills have taken her around the world on assignment

💬 One of the things I love most about languages is COMMUNICATION 🗣️

This week, I provided French/English interpretation for someone during an appointment.

My job was to help make sure that both parties could communicate clearly and confidently, without the language barrier getting in the way.

But afterwards, we carried on chatting together in French.

And honestly? It made my day! 😊

There was no lesson, no worksheet, no grammar exercise…

Just a lovely, natural conversation between two people who happened to share a language.

And that’s exactly why I love languages so much.

They’re not just about learning vocabulary or getting the perfect grade.

They’re about connecting with people.

About being able to understand someone, share a story, have a laugh, build a relationship or simply have a conversation that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

For me, that’s what languages are all about. 🌍💬

And those little moments when you realise, “I’m actually communicating in another language!” are pretty special.

💛 SEN Wednesday 💛

“I'm not good at languages., I just don't get it”

I hear variations of this quite often from young people with ASD, Dyslexia, ADHD or anxiety.

But here’s the thing…

Being good at languages isn’t about having a perfect memory, being able to learn vocabulary quickly or getting everything right first time.

For some young people, particularly those with additional needs, the traditional way of learning a language simply doesn’t work for them.

They might need:

🧩 smaller chunks of information
🔁 lots of repetition
👀 visual prompts
🎧 listening and speaking before writing
⏰ more processing time
💬 opportunities to practise without pressure
🎯 lessons linked to their interests
🌱 plenty of encouragement and confidence-building

And that’s okay.

A young person who struggles to memorise 30 vocabulary words might be brilliant at communicating, picking up patterns, remembering things that interest them or understanding a language through conversation.

Sometimes it’s not the learner who needs changing.

It’s the way we teach. 💛

🌍 CAREER OF THE WEEK: BUSINESS 💼

When your child asks, “But when am I ever going to use French/German?” — here’s one possible answer: business!

Last week, someone commented on my post to say they had used their Modern Languages skills throughout a long career in business. I loved hearing that real-life example because it shows just how many ways languages can be useful.

You might use a language to:

🌍 communicate with international customers
🤝 build relationships with overseas clients and suppliers
📧 write emails and communicate with colleagues abroad
📈 help a business enter new markets
✈️ work with international teams or even abroad
💬 negotiate, present and build trust with people from other countries

And you don’t have to work in languages to benefit from them.

You could be a sales manager, marketing professional, project manager, buyer, accountant, HR professional or business owner — and your French or German could still give you an advantage.

So, when you’re encouraging your young person to keep going with their language, remember:

They might not know yet where that language could take them. 🌍

📚 A little CPD update from me!

As a tutor working with children and young people, I believe that keeping my knowledge and training up to date is just as important as keeping my subject knowledge current.

This week, I’ve refreshed two important areas of my training:

✅ Safeguarding Children in Schools and Academies – NSPCC
✅ Allergy Awareness & Anaphylaxis Training (in compliance with Benedict's Law)

For me, safeguarding and learner wellbeing are an essential part of providing safe, supportive and professional tuition. ❤️

Whether I’m working with a learner online, in person or supporting them alongside their school education, I want parents to know that I take their child’s safety, wellbeing and individual needs seriously.

I’m always learning, developing and refreshing my skills so I can continue to provide the best possible support to the young people I work with.

💛 World Su***de Prevention Day | 10 September

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day, and as someone who works closely with young people, I feel it’s important to acknowledge it.

I’ve recently refreshed my Safeguarding Children in Schools training, which has been a timely reminder of the responsibility we all have to notice when something doesn’t seem right and to know when and how to seek further support.

Young people can face pressures that aren’t always visible. Sometimes, simply checking in, listening without judgement and letting someone know you’re there can make a difference.

We don’t always need to have the right words or all the answers. Sometimes, starting the conversation matters.

This year’s theme is “Changing the Narrative on Su***de” — encouraging more open conversations and helping to reduce the stigma around asking for support.
