🌟 Tutoring Highlight of the Week 🌟

One of the biggest wins about one-to-one tuition is the flexibility to adapt completely to the learner in front of me.

This week, a parent requested a revision session to prepare their Year 10 child for a mock GCSE French reading assessment. After quickly working through the reading comprehension questions, it became clear that these weren’t causing any difficulty. Instead, we identified the French-to-English translation task as the area needing the most attention.

So, we switched gears and focused the session entirely on translation skills using Edexcel sample assessment materials.

No waiting for a teacher to circulate around a class of 30 pupils. No spending time on skills already mastered. Just targeted support, focused exactly on their knowledge gaps ahead of the assessment.

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching languages is building lessons around my students’ interests.

For example, I love spending time in my garden. It might seem an unusual starting point for a language lesson, but it can lead to so much learning:

🌱 What I’m doing today
🏡 What my garden used to be like
✨ My dream garden
💭 Opinions and descriptions

The best part? The same approach works with almost any interest – football ⚽️, gaming 🕹️, horses 🐴, art 🖼️, music 🎵, cooking 🍳, trains 🚂, animals 🦊… the possibilities are endless.

When learning feels relatable and enjoyable, confidence grows and language starts to come naturally.

🚨 Something New is Coming… 🚨

I’m currently exploring venues and times for a range of small-group French and German exam-focused sessions for the next academic year.

These may be available both in person and online, depending on demand.

🇫🇷 A small moment. A big milestone!

I spend just one hour a week with one of my youngest French learners, who is only 2 years old.

During our sessions, I speak French throughout our play together. We sing, play games, go in the garden and repeat key words naturally in conversation.

One word we’ve used a lot is encore (“again”).

Over time, I’ve watched his understanding develop. At first, he simply heard the word. Then he began repeating it when encouraged.

This week, during a ball game, I asked:

“Encore ?”

And for the very first time, without prompting, he looked at me and replied:

“Oui !”

It might seem like a tiny moment, but it represents something huge:

✅ He understood the question.
✅ He processed it independently.
✅ He chose an appropriate response.
✅ He answered in French.

At just 2 years old!

Language learning isn’t always about memorising lists of vocabulary. Sometimes it’s about hundreds of tiny interactions that gradually build understanding, confidence and communication.

Small toddler steps lead to big growth. ❤️
