Amit Chaudhary (Polygon Technology), Ganesh Viswanath-Natraj (Warwick Business School)

On 10 May 2022, the price of , an algorithmic operating on the Terra , fell and it lost its peg to one US dollar. Using the devaluation of the TerraUSD peg as a case study, this column shows how algorithmic are vulnerable to speculative attacks when the system is under-collateralised. The holiday gift-giving season is upon us and the UK is in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis.

So why might some people prioritise buying luxury goods over daily necessities?

Buying luxury goods is an addictive status symbol that Naomi Muggleton finds is exacerbated by inequality and social status.

Do you find the grass is always greener on the other side?

How big our homes are, how expensive our cars are, how exotic our holidays are. Do they directly contribute to our happiness, or do we simply value what we have in comparison to those around us?

This comparative nature of the mind is one of many thought-provoking findings that behavioural science has taught us.

Nick Chater unpacks this notion among others, as he considers what exactly we have learned from communicating behavioural science 👉 https://bit.ly/3W66uhN

Now more than ever, it’s vital to stand out from your competition.

Competition among digital platforms is fiercer, more dynamic, and less predictable than between conventional businesses. As digital platforms seek to secure new users, they often expand into new territory, where they face a mixed bag of rivals.

It’s a cutthroat landscape. Just as a digital platform defeats its challengers to secure a market, an entirely different competitor pops up on another front.

What worked against one rival might not work with another. And because digital platforms face challengers from different directions - often at the same time - their response must change swiftly.

How can digital platforms stay ahead in a game where the goalposts are constantly shifting? How should they confront competitors from different sectors and with different technology?

Do digital platforms enjoy winner-takes-it-all dynamics or is their new-found market dominance fragile? And how can they win over new customers who don’t really care which platform they use?

We’ve developed a competition grid to help digital platforms determine how to compete - depending on the nature of the competition.

Cadets are expected to spend time on the ship’s bridge, absorbing the complex tasks of navigation that are essential for their career progression to become officers.

At sea, cadets need to put theory into practice, learning how to navigate a ship through busy lanes or into port for instance.

Classroom simulations can go so far, but doing this when feeling seasick, tired, lonely or under pressure is a different experience. On board, the captain and officers are responsible for ensuring cadets get an opportunity to learn.

Stablecoins could be backed by central banks as a short cut to a much-talked-about Central Bank Digital Currency, the Gillmore Centre Policy Forum heard.

Antoine Martin, of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, revealed research into the future of digital currencies that highlighted a new path for Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs).

Instead of ploughing more money and resources into producing their own digital currency, central banks could support the development of safe stablecoins.

Mr Martin unveiled his thinking to policymakers gathered for the Gillmore Centre Policy Forum at WBS London at The Shard.

Warwick Business School’s Gillmore Centre was established in 2019 thanks to a £3 million donation from Clive Gillmore, founding member and CEO of Mondrian Investment Partners that holds Rothko as a subsidiary.

Its mission is to research emerging technologies in the financial sector such as AI, blockchain, mobile payments, cryptocurrencies and crowdfunding platforms.
