Supporting Maths and English education in Secondary Schools in Africa.

Based at the University of Warwick, Warwick in Africa (WiA) is a well-established innovative, philanthropically funded programme, developed over seven years from a small student volunteering project to a multi-layered programme which supports learners and their teachers with maths and English education in South Africa, Tanzania and Ghana.

On 26 July they left for South Africa, on 27 July they arrived, and before they knew it, it was 06 Sept - time to depart.

During their time in the partner schools in the 4 regions, they collaborated with the established teachers and participated in classroom activities alongside pupils - even chess clubs and singing this time around!

While it is challenging to assess the full impact of the placements immediately, conversations with the volunteers suggest that their presence in the 6 schools was positively received in the classrooms, staffrooms, and playgrounds.

Our babies have flown the nest! How quickly they grow up!

It's been 6 months since we recruited our 2025 cohort, and after 2 training days, 1 intercultural workshop, 2 guest lectures/workshops, 1 film evening, 10 calls with the teachers, and 1 training week *breathe* 8 of our volunteers are now in Ghana!

They are volunteering alongside the established classroom teachers in Agona East and Accra, supporting in the delivery of Maths and English....and this year, French!

One for the older WiA alumni, but a timeless individual and leader fitting for all present and future WiA cohorts.

Bob Nameng passed away this April in his home in Kliptown, Soweto (Jo'burg). He was a community leader and driver for change and empowerment. His Kliptown Youth Project at SKY (Soweto Kliptown Youth) transformed the lives of all involved as he pushed for better education, learning, community, and dignity.

Follow the link below to watch the Translanguaging: Multilingual classrooms workshop led by Warwick's Dr Jason Anderson and Laurent Ahishakiye.
We discussed and learnt about the impact of learning and teaching in foreign languages rather than mother tongues.
