'Is there a limit to the extraterritorial application of competition law?' with Dr Qianlan Wu on Monday, 6 March 2023 at 3pm - 4pm (GMT), Faculty of Arts, FAB2.43.
About the Event:
In economic globalization, competition agencies have referred to the unilateral and extraterritorial application of domestic competition rules and bilateral cooperations as the main legal instruments to tackle the challenges. Such enforcement does not necessarily promote international trade liberalization. The Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which came into force in January 2022, is the world's largest free trade area covering the ten ASEAN member states and its five FTA partners. Chapter 13 of the RCEP agreement sets out principles and institutional framework for competition law enforcement within the multilateral partnership. The paper critically assesses the arrangement and examines to what extent it has departed from the unilateral and bilateral extraterritorial application of competition laws and constituted a novel model.
About the Speaker:
Dr Qianlan Wu is an assistant professor in the school of law, University of Nottingham. Her research focuses on international competition laws and the development of Antimonopoly Law in China and the changing relationships among the state, law and market economy in China's reforms.

Racial Capitalism and the Anthropocene. Thursday 9 March 2023 17:00-18:00 | S0.20 (Social Sciences). Professor Carmen G. Gonzalez. Loyola University, Chicago School of Law.
Racial capitalism is a useful framework for understanding the intersecting socio-ecological crises of the Anthropocene, including unprecedented environmental degradation, extreme economic inequality, and the resurgence of authoritarian ethno-nationalism. This lecture examines the logic of racial capitalism in order to distinguish between reforms that entrench the system and those that facilitate its transformation.
Professor Gonzalez is a world-renowned expert in international environmental law, environmental justice, human rights and the environment, and food security. She has taught at numerous prestigious academic institutions around the globe and has participated in environmental law capacity projects in Asia, Latin America, and the former Soviet Union. She was chair of the Environmental Law Section of the Association of American Law Schools and served as member and vice-chair of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law. She serves on the Board of Trustees of Earthjustice, the largest public interest environmental law firm in the United States. Prior to becoming a professor, she clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Thelton E. Henderson in San Francisco, practiced law with Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro, and served as assistant regional counsel at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Policing, Culture and Community — Resonate Festival
Policing, Culture and Community. Date: Tuesday, 14 March 2023
14:00-15:00. A webinar exploring the ways arts and culture can shift perceptions of policing.
The benefits of arts and culture in social, civic, health, and economic terms are widely researched, but until now, police forces have seldom engaged with creative endeavours in a sustained and systematic way. In 2019, however, West Midlands Police (WMP) embarked on a unique partnership with the Coventry City of Culture Trust (the Trust) in the delivery of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021. This partnership sought to enable officers to engage with arts and culture as a means of building positive community relationships, particularly amongst more vulnerable and seldom heard communities.
In this webinar, we will explore the findings from our research into this partnership, and into the broader potential for police partnerships with artists and creative practitioners outside and beyond the City of Culture. We situate our analysis within the context of a widespread crisis in police legitimacy, considering the ways in which arts-based interventions can offer a democratising space in which mutual perceptions can begin to shift; and exploring the complexities and challenges of these endeavours.
