Old Coventrians' Musicians

The choir I sing in runs a mentoring scheme for young conductors - the deadline for applications for the 2022/23 scheme is tomorrow. The choir is based in London, but participants don't need to be - one previous participant "commuted" from Northern Ireland for it! It's a great opportunity to learn more about choral conducting under the tutelage of renowned conductor and chorus master David Temple MBE.
At the request of Jan Beynon Butler, some music to keep you sane. Enjoy!
Jan Butler has asked me to share this having found it on my page! I hope all is well with all other Old Covent musicians out there. Stay safe everyone. Ga-LORE! (Those from my generation will understand the final point there!)

Gaynor Keeble (in fine voice) stole every scene she was in at The Grand Theatre in Leeds on Saturday night (Marcelina in Marriage of Figaro for Opera North)! Comic timing and facial expressions were to die for and no one does a smothering embrace like our Gaynor! (Definite shades of Katisha from Mikado)
Do you have anymore details re the carol concert? Rehearsal? I came along last year and would love to get involved again!
If anyone hears of a performance of Messiah with the magnificent Beecham or Andrew Davis orchestration, do please let me know.
Very pleased to welcome Niall Doherty and Lucy to my flat last night. (And not just because they brought me a delicious curry!)
If you didn't catch the amazing Chinese tenor at the BBC Cardiff (what a fine city! Not that I'm sucking up to the page moderator or anything) Singer of the World competition on Sunday night I urge you to make yourself a cup of tea/pour yourself a glass of wine and watch 15 minutes of musical brilliance - excitement, pathos, extraordinary control of dynamics (a high C or thereabouts in the Rossini that started fff and ended ppp), and a wonderfully expressive (and handsome) face. It's not often you hear Berlioz in this competition (Les Troyens), and his plaintive aria from Cosi left the previous winner who was commentating pretty much lost for words - it's not often that a gentle aria is greeted with cheers and storming applause from an audience but his was. Definitely a star whose moment has come. The others were good too, but you will find him on third, and he's easy to spot as he was wearing a normal tie rather than a dickie bow. And he won his round (the others didn't really stand a chance!) so he'll be back for the final on Saturday night.

Calling all musicians... we are trying to find you! Where are you and what are you doing? Still sing Still singing/playing?

It is with great sorrow and respect that King Henry VIII School marks the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. We join the nation and the world in recognising her extraordinary commitment to service over the past 70 years. Our sincere condolences to her family.

A treat for lovers of Classical music, oratorio, music in the Cathedral, Haydn's wonderful setting of The Creation or would just like to support Spires Music and local performers... Bonus: a good few OCs involved to chat to in the interval too!

Can anyone help??
An OC has asked if anyone would be available to play the organ for a funeral at the Chapel in Packington Park. this coming Saturday. It is a delightful instrument, no pedals, and was designed by Charles Jennens, Handel's patron. Please message OC Musicians, or contact Jan Butler asap if you can help. Thank you.

Year 2s at KH were so disappointed that their Nativity was cancelled due to Covid, but they must be a spirited lot because they persuaded their teachers to let them do it anyway! No pics with children allowed, but they were there! It was a super performance of Noisy Christmas and you would have been amazed at the quality of the singing. Wonderful! Acting and production was excellent too, of course , but in my (JanB) experience, quality singing among infants is a rare treat! Christmas in May? Why not!

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alan Etherden on the 27th October 2021. Many of you will remember Alan fondly as a man of great intellect and humility, and a pianist and musician of supreme ability. Alan taught the piano at King Henry's for many years and contributed hugely to the nurturing of many fine musicians. He will be sorely missed. Alan's funeral took place on the 16th November at Oakley Wood Crematorium; King Henry's Music Department was represented by a good number of teachers both past and present. There are plans to celebrate Alan's enormous contribution to the musical life of King Henry's and we will share these with you in due course.

We will be running the OC Christmas Choir again in the Christmas Concert on Thursday December 16th! I would love as many of you as possible to come and be involved - we will sing two or three carols and you are all welcome to join in with other choral performances during the evening.

I will run a rehearsal on Wednesday 15th, time to be fixed but I imagine at 4pm.

There will, of course, be mulled wine and delicious bites to eat during the concert.

Do come and get involved - the more the merrier, I hope! Let me know on [email protected] or contact Jan.

Hopefully see many of you then 😀

Old Coventrians' Musicians, please can you help answer this plea from Conn Anson O'Connell, teacher at King Henry VIII School:

Dear all, I hope that you are all well and safe. I find myself in the rather strange and slightly embarrassing position of asking for help. Aoife, our youngest daughter, is applying to the Guildhall conservatoire for music in London to play the cello. As most of you know she's pretty talented on it. She went for a consultation lesson with Tim Lowe, who's the Head of the chamber section at Guildhall last Wednesday, and Aoife was delighted because she's made good progress since she saw him last in February. One small issue tho'! Tim has told her that she has to upgrade her cello, and that this will make a big difference to her audition (and ongoing studies). He has said that she needs to be playing a cello in the region of £20,000 to £25,000. We have tried Benslow Musical Instrument Loan Scheme, (we clearly cannot afford a new cello at this price) but whilst they would help, they have no cellos currently available for loan in that region. I'm just trying to see if anyone knows anybody who might have some ideas or know someone who would like to invest in Aoife and a cello. At this price cellos only increase in value over the years, and the person who bought it would be making a safe investment.
Sian and I are just asking everyone and anyone. We will do anything to help Aoife progress in her chosen life path - and clearly are not averse to begging!
My love to all - stay safe and well - Conn
