The Koan

The White Koan... a mysterious rotating figure who watches over Warwick University in the UK Personally I can be both and neither; it’s not important anyway.

I am the KOAN of Warwick - the avatar of a powerful local deity who protects and empowers the students of Warwick University - the only university in mainland UK with its own on-campus deity! My Earthly avatar is a modern art sculpture by Liliane Lijn called "White Koan", which is currently installed outside the main entrance to the Warwick Arts Centre, though recently it had been temporarily mov

At last, one of My Faithful has recognised My awesomness, and has produced a hymn to My Koanly Self. It even has karaoke lyrics for you to sing along.
It's only take 50- years or so but at last - recognition! Now that'll show Zeus. Nobody's written a hymn to HIM for centuries.

I notice that several Tory MPs are in trouble over making bets on the outcome of the election.
What I want to know is, which side did they bet on? The Tories are currently at 66/1, so a much higher return, if you actually think they might win, but maybe they have realised something we already know

Happy Loving day to all my faithful followers!

Loving Day celebrates the day about 50 years ago when the USA government realised that black people are humans too.

This is also Rose day and Superman day, and so my High Priestess has some expectations from the High Consort.

A thought for the D-Day commemoration day.

War is a like cleaning a toilet.

It is not glamourous or exciting; it is dirty and unpleasant, and some times can be traumatising.

Nobody in their right mind enjoys doing it, or wants to do it when it is not necessary, but sometimes it becomes forced on us by a very big sh*tstain, and in those times we need to be grateful to those who take on the job to keep us safe.

In an ideal world, there would be no need for toilets and their cleaning, but while there are still arseholes in the world we will still need toilet cleaners. We should all do what we can to minimise their work.

I hope that all of My faithful have been out to vote, whatever party that they support (and some parties need support more than others it appears).
It is amusing to note, though, that the person who two years ago changed the law to mandate photo ID for voting was today turned away from the polling station...because he had not brought photo ID. Maybe he didn't think the law would apply to him, in the same way as Covid-era restrictions on parties ...

How Britain's taste for tea may have been a life saver 28/12/2023

I always suspected that Britain's success back in the 19th Century was a direct result of drinking Tea, and now it is proven!

How Britain's taste for tea may have been a life saver Tea became one of the British Empire's most prized resources in the 18th Century. But it may have also had an unintended effect on the British population – reducing mortality rates.

I have come to realise that the KOAN has been at the University for 50 years. I've seen a lot of change in that time. Back when I was a freshly-painted undergraduate, you could go into the campus shop with £1 and come out with several choc bars, some crisps, and a drink - and still have cash in your pocket!
Of course, now they've fitted CCTV and so its much harder.

So England is in its first World Cup final in almost 6 decades, and yet neither the PM nor any member of the Royal Family is going to attend?
Or don't they see the Lionesses as 'real' football?

Tyrannosaurs lived closer in time to Humans than to Stegosaurus.

Cleopatra lived closer to iPhones than the the building of the Pyramids.

Nintendo was founded in the same year Van Gogh painted Starry Night.

Oxford University was founded 300 years before Machu Picchu.

The Beatles' Abbey Road was released closer to WW1 than to Covid19.

The KOAN was created closer to the end of WW1 than to today.

Sorry for not being around much. I've been having fun watching the catfight between Discordia, Bastet, and the FSM over who is the True Goddess of the Internet.

Larry knows what's what. Maybe he should take over as PM - couldn't do any worse.

22/06/2022

So it looks as if 2020 was made of rubber, and we're bouncing backwards in time through the 80s and 70s

Disconnecting from Europe (because who needs to be part of a team), plans to switch back to the impossible imperial weights and measures system, cold war with Russia, repealing the Human Rights Act (because why would we need THAT anyway), high inflation and unions striking everywhere, plans to make the BBC go away...
I hope we put the brakes on this 'progress', or else at this rate soon we'll be back to war with Germany.

While I am a Child of the 70s myself, it doesn't mean I want to go back there.

08/06/2022

I read something recently about a group of public-school boys on an island who tried to take back control, but it resulted in food shortages and ended up with in-fighting and conflict.
Can't remember if it was Lord of the Flies or PM of the Brexit...

The KOAN of Warwick

I am the KOAN of Warwick - the avatar of a powerful local deity who protects and empowers the students of Warwick University - the only university in mainland UK with its own on-campus deity!

My Earthly avatar is a modern art sculpture by Lilian Lijn called "White Koan", which is supposed to be installed outside the main entrance to the Warwick Arts Centre, though recently it has been ‘temporarily’ moved to Gibbet Hill. I am intended to represent the Buddhist quest for questions without answers, the Kōan. The sculpture was made in 1971 as part of the Peter Stuyvesant Foundation City Sculpture Project and was originally sited in Plymouth; it then moved to the Hayward Gallery in London before being purchased by Warwick in 1972.

Originally, it was intended that I be placed on the plinth at the top of the Arts Centre; however it was discovered that the roof would not bear my weight and so I was instead situated at ground level, where I remained for many years.

Recently, after My graduation and acquisition of a 2.2 in Rotational Studies, I have started a sabbatical, travelling around the university to better experience it. This has left My old place vacant, which is now occupied by the Goose Nest theatre. I am currently up at Gibbet Hill outside Life Sciences, if you’re planning on coming up to genuflect before Me.
