James went to the French Embassy in London last week. Here is his experience:

"I entered this «mon mot français préféré» competition in April (my word was « formidable»). Although I didn't win, I was invited to attend a French Alumni event at the French Embassy in London, which I went to yesterday!

I got to have a very brief conversation (in French!) with Her Excellency, Hélène Duchêne, the French Ambassador to the UK. I also met Tatty Macleod, a super funny and talented French-British comedian. There were many French guests (the 2 that stood out to me were Pierre-Clément and Emmanuelle Bury), who gave some incredible advice for future careers abroad."

"Grândola, Vila Morena" - Portuguese Carnation Revolution song (LYRICS + Translation) 25/04/2024

This week we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Portugal’s Carnation revolution, which on 25 April 1974 put an end to one of Europe’s longest lasting dictatorships. It precipitated the process of decolonization and ushered in an unprecedented period of development in Portugal. This date is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the last five decades and likewise to assess the current challenges facing the country and more broadly democracies around the world.

Listen to “Grândola, vila Morena”, by José Afonso, the final cue for the revolution.

Cat Day in Russia
The 1st March is Cat Day in Russia. Do you know that in Moscow and in Saint Petersburg there are cat museums and cat cafes. Furthermore, there is a unique tradition of cat guardians in one of the biggest museums in the world in Saint Petersburg - Hermitage. Cats look after exhibits in Hermitage! The word of cat in Russian and English are very similar with the difference in the vowel: КОТ (you pronounce it like an English word ‘cot’). How do you say ‘cat’ in other languages? Share a photo of your cat in comments.

Event next week

Luana Tavano Garcia (PhD, University of Warwick) will speak on ‘Brazilian Identity in Performance’.

Tuesday, January 24, 11:00-12:00 MS Teams

This talk is based on Luana Tavano Garcia’s research. Luana’s PhD thesis focused on the Brazilian context and traced how modern Brazil framed itself as a nation both through a particular postcolonial discourse and through embodied practices. It also explored the ways in which contemporary artists negotiate the conception of ‘Brazilian identity’ in present-day performances. Utilizing an interdisciplinary perspective, Luana highlighted the contradictions and juxtapositions of diverse ‘identities’ included in the Brazilian national consciousness and the challenges that artists face when exposing such ambivalences in an ever-changing socio-political environment.
