A Rant About Doom, Gloom, and the Misrepresentation of Aikido (and Life in General)
Why does everything have to be so doom and gloom these days? I scroll through videos and pictures of Aikido demonstrations, and the seriousness is so thick you could cut it with a bokken. What are we trying to prove? That we’re unshakable warriors? That the weight of centuries rests on our shoulders? Honestly, it often feels like some people are masking incompetence or maybe just completely missed the mark on what Aikido is supposed to be. Not all posts, of course, but a significant chunk of them radiate this somber, heavy aura that’s downright exhausting.
Let’s get one thing straight: Aikido is serious, yes. It’s effective, fast, and powerful. But here’s the thing—if I can see the fingerprints of your hands when you’re executing tai-sabaki or applying a technique, maybe ease up on the dramatics and focus on the basics. It’s okay to be human. You don’t have to carry the weight of feudal Japan on your shoulders in every movement.
Take a moment to lighten up. Let joy and happiness spread through your practice. Watch Osensei’s videos. Seriously, watch them. You’ll see his cute, toothless smile beaming with confidence and grace. That’s the spirit of Aikido—inner peace, confidence, and a sense of connection—not a grim-faced death march through techniques.
And this isn’t just about Aikido. This heavy, overly serious attitude infects so many industries. It’s as if people believe that projecting misery and intensity is the only way to be taken seriously. But here’s the kicker: authenticity is magnetic. Be yourself. Show your passion. Bring some life into your work.
If you’re telling me that the stern, unrelenting face you’re presenting is your true self all the time, then I’ve got one simple suggestion: maybe try some laxatives. Because if you can’t find even a sliver of joy, maybe the problem isn’t the world—it’s inside.
So, here’s the challenge: smile more. Laugh more. Let the joy of Aikido and life shine through. Confidence isn’t about being grim; it’s about being comfortable enough to beam, to engage, and to spread that energy to others. We’re all human, so let’s act like it. After all, even Osensei smiled. What’s your excuse?
