Company 'X' based in the US wants to avoid taxes on their earnings. They setup a company 'Y' in tax free place like the Cayman Islands.
Company Y cleverly owns the intellectual property that company X needs to use. Y licenses this to X.

X makes $50B after expenses but don't want to pay tax. Since Y is still owed money for licensing the IP out, X must now pay Y their fee.
Y charges $50B for renting out their IP to X. Their profit is now $0, therefore they pay 0% taxes.
Company Y's profit is now $50B with a zero tax rate in the Cayman Islands. They pay zero tax.
Remember, X and Y are the same company working together, they are just separate entities.c.academy
